Al's not running.
Just Like Jimmy Carter, he has found a higher calling.

As well it should be. He is doing wonderful things here to the extent that no other Veep has done.

1. What do you base that on?
Is it strictly your opinion or do you have something to back up your statement?

He has never come right out and definitively said he won't run. I hear from more and more people lately, people in the know, who are very sure he will run. He's biding his time, waiting to see how the field shakes out and waiting for Hillary-mania to die down and for her to falter in some way. He also cannot declare until after the Oscars.

Al Gore is the only candidate who can afford to bide his time -- the minute he enters the race, the entire picture will change. He has huge netroots support, which is going to be extremely important in '08. No one will be able to swiftboat him -- everyone already knows everything about him and there's nothing there to swiftboat. He has instant credibility and he can accomplish so much more in a position of power in the White House.

5. If he's waiting for Hillary, Obama or Edwards to falter
he'll be waiting a long time. Also, virtually all the good campaign people and fundraisers are committed now. I just don't think he has the political fire anymore, and that's certainly not a bad thing. But it's just my feeling. I'm no expert.

8. No one is immune
to missteps, whether they be Obama, Hillary or Edwards. As for the Campaign Advisors and such, I can almost promise you that some may leave their current posts to sign up with Al, not that he would willingly poach them, mind you. Should he enter the race, he'd be a HUGE force to reckon with and anyone with any political knowledge (read Obama, Hillary, Edwards) would not count him out. I predict he WILL enter the race and may end up taking one of the aforementioned as his running mate.

But that's based solely on a gut feeling and nothing scientific or linkable. :-)

16. I agree on all points and on the same basis. One deviation? He might
choose another VP than any of the three mentioned. (not really much of a deviation, since you used the subjunctive)

I'd suggest Bill Moyers. Maybe Clark.

Al Gore is certainly the elephant in the Survivor Island council hut.

Now get back to your project and quit thinking about 08 candidates! (just kidding)

9. All my own opinion. No inside skinny,
I'm just basing it on my experience in watching politics for the last many years.

He has a purpose now that far exceeds what he sees in running. Hell, the Titanic only crashed once.

26. Gore states that he has no plans to run so let go of your little fantasy
Asked whether he planned to run in the 2008 election, Gore said: "I don't have plans to be a candidate again. I'm involved in a different kind of campaign."

http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=politicsNews&storyID=2007-01-17T233027Z_01_N17375915_RTRUKOC_0_US-GORE-JAPAN-CLIMATE.xml

this story is dated 2 weeks ago. Get over it and move on.

30. Well, that never stopped anybody else from running. Hillary said the same thing
a few months ago. So did Obama.

If Gore says I am absolutely not going to run, then I would believe he isn't going to run. As long as he keeps the door open then I think it's very possible he will run.

There is nothing to get over or move on from, as of yet. But thanks for thinking about us.

He'll just stroll right into the White House like he should have 6 years ago. Money will not decide Gore's fate.

19. It Seems To Me The Idea Of A Gore Candidacy Has Both Parties Twitching
which says to me they all see him as being a potentially formidable candidate. I saw the quotes and my reaction was to wonder if they were sincere, or are trying to buttonhole him. After all, friend of Rove Donna and Hillary's Carville are not without their agendas. If Al Gore chooses not to run, he is entitled to his decision. But it's year to the primaries and a year can be a very long time. A lot can change. In a year W has gone from being the darling of a majority to being considered the worst ever.

with the darling part being sarcasm. What I was referring to was the sharp decline in his ratings and the great increase in overall public disapproval over the last year.

although this is the first thread I have ever seen from the OP...

The only one who knows for certain whether Al Gore is running, is Al Gore. I really hope he does decide to run though.

Al is a great man and I would vote for him for President. But he has other callings in life that (I believe) he feels can be better served from without the politico.
