My dad's in the ICU

He's 89 years old and in CHF. Fortunately he is in Columbia Presbyterian, one of the best heart centers in the country. They are going to do an angioplasty in the morning. If you pray, pray for him- he's a great guy= a good Dem, totally with it too. I am so distraught right now- and to top it off I have a terrible cold and I can't even go see him- the last thing I want to do is give him a cold that would likely become pneumonia . His name is Abe. Thanks for your good wishes, karma, prayer., whatever.

Recovery is a matter of hours. The harder part is the emotional aftermath. Abe's gunna need ya.

I'm a few years younger, but went through the same thing just a few months ago. What was terrifying is now near-routine. It is amazing what they can do for us.

They didn't get him from the local hospital to Columbia till later than we thought, so he has not had the procedure yet, but he was flirting with the female ambulance crew on the way uptown.

My dad is a holocaust survivor- he was in Auschwitz and a bunch of other camps, so he is every sense of the word a survivor. I am concerned because his pressure is unstable- low, not high, but still not that great. In the meantime, I m running a fever, so mask or no mask. I'm not going anywhere near him- the last thing I want to do is make things worse.

He says he wants to be around to watch the inauguration in 2009- so keep pulling for him in whatever way you're comfortable with. If any of you are Jewish and go to synagogue. his hebrew name is Avraham ben Shprintza. Thanks again for all of your good wishes- I will let you know how he's doing.

My advice to you is to have someone there by his side as often as possible.
The truth is, is that the nurses are busy. When they see he is loved, they will give him more care.
I was told that often by both the doctors and nurses, that me being there made them do a better job.

And don't be surprised if he goes a little wacko from the anesthia.(spelling?) My dad was talking to the ceiling after his operation at 87, they told me that the drugs they use to put them under really take a toll on them at that age. It took my dad about a month to get out of 'the crazies'.
