Are strings being pulled in the Ravenel case?
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 02:15 AM by americanstranger
I noticed that early reports stated that Giuliani SC campaign chairman Thomas Ravenel was indicted for possession with intent to deliver crack cocaine. I got a little curious, so I did a Google News search for 'Thomas Ravenel crack.' I got four hits - and upon checking the links, I noticed that two of the stories had the word 'crack' removed.

I then did another Google News search for the terms 'Thomas Ravenel cocaine,' and it returned 237 articles. The media seem to favor the angle that Ravenel intended to distribute cocaine, not crack cocaine.

What's the difference, you ask?

A quick Google of the term 'crack cocaine sentencing' returned a link from NPR from October 27, 2006, with a report about the 20th anniversary of the Crack Cocaine law. The summary of the report says it all:

Friday is the 20th anniversary of a law that created mandatory minimum sentences for crack cocaine crimes. The rules mandated far harsher sentences for people caught with crack cocaine than for those caught with powdered cocaine.

Mandatory minimum. Harsher sentences.

Is the case against Ravenel being spun away from a crack possession charge to a simple powdered coke charge to save the multi-millionaire from a mandatory prison sentence? Looks like it, no?

1. May just be spin.
In the eyes of most Republican voters in SC, I'm guessing that powdered coke is something rich, white stockbrokers do, while crack cocaine is something associated with black gangbangers and homeless people. Downplaying the whole crack aspect makes it easier to sweep this under the rug with their constituency, IMO.

2. will the media axe Rudy to 'spin' this, like they're letting him spin his Kerik connection, withOUT
asking any followup questions, as did David Gregory with Bill Paxson?

not one question about Kerik's association with Giuliani Partners

3. My tinfoil is tingling!
The press seems to be treating him with the same kid gloves and selective amnesia that they used to cover the shrub back in 2000. Makes me think the Powers-That-Be have already decided who will be our next leader. :scared: :tinfoilhat: :scared:

5. There's probably more to the story about the US Attorney who prosecuted him
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 10:19 AM by KoKo01
who was rushed through Senate for confirmation by Lindsey Graham and Bill Frist in the hours before Senate Recess in 2008. Ravenel was rumoured to be going after Lindsey's seat in '08. And then there's the Miller guy whose 22 years old that supposedly was supplying the crack or cocaine. Then there's that this was being investigated before Ravenel "according to some sources" bought his way into the job as State Treasurer. Then there's that Ravenel is 44 years old and not married...and cocaine ring and Lindsey Graham and US Attorney from the Gonzo Justice Department ...and then there's the Ravenel's who are from an old and very prominent Charleston Family with a relative named "Pug" who served time for bank fraud and Clinton pardoned when he left office....and then there's ....well the Ravenel thing has lots of "hanging threads" which could be explored. Is the US Attorney one of the only "good guys" to come out of Gonzo Justice Department? With Lindsey and Frist supporting Lloyd maybe Justice Dept. had little to do with his appointment. Maybe there's nothing there except a guy with a habit that gut caught.

*WASHINGTON* -- Minutes before noon today, the *U.S.* Senate unanimously confirmed Reginald “*Reggie*” *Lloyd* to serve as *U.S.* *Attorney* for South Carolina. *U.S.* Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) made this statement following the confirmation vote.

“With the Senate’s approval of *Reggie* *Lloyd*’s nomination, South Carolina will now have a permanent *U.S.* *Attorney*. The role of the *U.S.* *Attorney* is to vigorously enforce the laws of the land and protect our nation from foreign and domestic threats.

All South Carolinians should take pride in the fact we have someone of tremendous integrity, character, and experience serving in this position. I look forward to *Reggie* being sworn in and appreciate him for agreeing to serve our nation at this important time.

“I also appreciate Majority Leader Bill Frist’s effort today to have *Reggie* confirmed on the last day before the President’s Day recess. Senator Frist went the extra mile to ensure his nomination would be approved.”

Politician Charged With Coke Distribution
*COLUMBIA, S.C., June 19, 2007

*(AP) *South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, a former real estate developer who became a rising political star after his election last year, was indicted Tuesday on federal cocaine charges.

The millionaire is accused of buying less than 500 grams of the drug to share with other people in late 2005, U.S. Attorney Reggie Lloyd said. Ravenel, 44, is charged with distribution of cocaine, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The investigation into Ravenel arose from a drug case last year in Charleston, Lloyd said. State Law Enforcement Division Chief Robert Stewart said his agents were aware of the allegations before Ravenel was elected in November, but they didn't have enough information to pursue criminal charges. The case was turned over to the FBI in April.

"The investigation is just beginning," the federal prosecutor said.

The man accused of selling Ravenel the drug, Michael L. Miller, is in custody on the same charge.

Ravenel will be allowed to turn himself in, authorities said. The treasurer's office referred all questions to Ravenel's lawyer Joel Collins, who did not return a message left at his office.

Gov. Mark Sanford suspended Ravenel immediately based on the serious nature of the charge. The governor said he would name an interim treasurer soon.

"These are obviously very serious allegations that we're constitutionally bound to act upon, and they'll ultimately be decided by the courts." Sanford said in a statement.

Ravenel started his political career in 2004, funding his own campaign for a U.S. Senate seat. He finished a close third in the Republican primary.

Ravenel was founder of the Ravenel Development Corp., a commercial real estate development company. His father, Arthur Ravenel Jr., was a powerful politician from Charleston who served eight years in the U.S. House and is a former state representative and state senator.

Thomas Ravenel is also the state chairman for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign.
