When is Enough?
Are you happy with the candidates and the implicit platforms they represent? Do you see yourself and your ideals represented adequately by any of the candidates? Or are you an unhappy fellow-traveler with the apparent "centrist" Democratic mainstream? What would it take for you to conclude that you've had it with the Democratic Party as it is presently constituted?

What if Congress acquiesced with an attack on Iran? (A lot of them say they're not ruling out any options.)
What if they just let the current investigations dribble out into nothing, taking no action to enforce their subpoenas?
What if they refuse to get out of Iraq until the Iraqis surrender their oil?

What if they win in '08 and--

put in a Romney-style, corporate-giveaway health care program?
pass the next round of NAFTA/GATT with weak or nonexistent worker protection?
acquiesce to the auto industry on the new CAFE standards?Pass Kyoto but refuse to take the next step on limiting emissions?

What would it take to make you say, "Enough!"?

And what are you prepared to do about it?

2. what should I be prepared to do?
I've voted against the centrist fuckstickery twice. People of evident good will adhere to the centrist planks even still. Are we to head to the barricades? I don't mean to sound flip - what the fuck are we supposed to do?

3. "And what are you prepared to do about it?"
Isn't that really the question? It's obvious nothing will be done any time soon if we wait for someone else to do something.

6. My intention was to stir debate.
I think we all have some kind of bottom line in us, and maybe some unarticulated sense of what our personal last straw is and what we might do then. I asked this question because I wanted to find out what other people think and feel. It seems like a legitimate enough question in times like these, and certainly there are a lot of posts on this board that at least skirt around the fringes of this topic.

11. wait for someone?? to bail us out of this mess, how much clearer
can it get? we have criminals running/ruining this country and they will keep on continuing, they have done it for 6 years and no one has stopped them, they will keep on with their madness until we say no more. just my two cents.

7. The tree of liberty
has long been thirsty.

As a whole, the citizens of our country have given up as caretakers of such ideals.

Perhaps we are waiting for someone who will do the job we are not willing to do?

If that is to be the case, I can only hope that they are better at bringing freedom to others than we have shown ourselves to be.

8. C'mon, JR, I've already invited you to my camp...
;)

Seriously, I've already said "enough". I ain't playing their game anymore.

There's nothing to be done except on the micro level -- organize locally, like Grace Lee Boggs advocates. (Did you watch the Bill Moyers interview with her last Friday?)

There are no saviors, there are no leaders, there's just us. Tend your garden, love your neighbor and create a space for peace in your own life. Fuck the politicians...

13. Funny--I had just written this reply to a PM from someone
who had backchanneled me about this thread:

I was on the streets in the 60's. I'm now 62. I'm not sure I have the personal energy to fight to change the world anymore. Mostly, we talk about expecting the whole economic system to come crashing down, something like the Great Depression without a leadership willing or able to enact the humanitarian programs of a Roosevelt. We live in the country & plan to build a small greenhouse this fall, with the idea of increasing our independence from the larger economy. Our neighbor, with whom we do a lot of back-and-forth communual projects, etc., raises a few beef cattle. I'm thinking about selling my old gas tractor in favor of an efficient, smaller diesel model that we could run on fuel such as soy oil if we have to. Right now I make fairly good money as a consulting forensic psychologist in private practice, but I wouldn't expect that to last pending a major downturn in the fortunes of the country.

As far as joining your camp, I'll bring the hot dogs. Hope your tent doesn't leak.
