A message from Veterans For America: A Victory for Returning Servicemembers and Veterans

Two months ago, I wrote to you regarding an amendment vital to the work of Veterans for America that had been introduced by Senators Obama and McCaskill as part of the latest war-time supplemental. The amendment called for a comprehensive study of the mental health and readjustment needs of today's service members, veterans, and their families. Unfortunately, the amendment was not included as part of that bill.

Today, I have good news to report.

Thanks to the thousands of faxes you sent to your members of Congress supporting this study, Senator McCaskill successfully included it in the Dignified Treatment of Wounded Warriors Act (S. 1606), which the Senate Armed Services Committee marked up yesterday (June 14th).

The face of today's military is drastically different from any we have ever sent to war. Our troops are returning to a system designed for earlier generations of warriors -- one that does not adequately address the service-connected health and readjustment needs of this generation. This study will help ensure that America doesn't abandon this generation of troops.
