G8 agreement on climate change a "disgrace":

MILAN (Reuters) - Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore denounced a deal by world leaders on curbing greenhouse gases as "a disgrace disguised as an achievement," saying on Thursday the agreement struck last week was insufficient.

The dedicated climate crusader, whose 2006 global warming documentary won an Oscar, said leaders at last week's G8 summit in Germany had not risen to the challenge to respond to what he calls a "planetary emergency."

"The eight most powerful nations gathered and were unable to do anything except to say 'We had good conversations and we agreed that we will have more conversations, and we will even have conversations about the possibility of doing something in the future on a voluntary basis perhaps."'

Just more deflection and a clear message to Congress to not even try to send him a bill about this before then, as if they even will. They're too busy still bowing to their corporate masters in the auto and coal industries. We cannot wait until the end of 2008 just to get started discussing this, and this proves just how out of touch he and many in this world still are regarding the urgency of the crisis we face. But they certainly proved Mr. Gore's point about the solutions to this going beyond politics to our moral imagination. It's time to get every state in this country to pass legislation that seeks carbon caps and greater investment in alternate energy sources. Screw DC. They are too busy with their partisan bickering to see what is happening all around us as they vie for political position as did those at the G8 summit. Personally, I think they should do away with these summits that exclude the very peopke who are LIVING with the repercussions of their actions and inaction. But yes, kudos to Angela Merkel for trying.
