Broward County Florida To Radio Station: "If You Want To Be Hurricane Radio Station, Fire Limbaugh"
<snip>

If it truly wants to be Broward County's official hurricane radio station, here's what WIOD (610 AM) needs to do:

Fire Rush Limbaugh.

At least that's the stand taken by Commissioner Stacy Ritter, who was able to prevent the county from renewing its hurricane information partnership with WIOD because the station carries the conservative icon's syndicated show.

Ritter pointed out that the majority of the nine county commissioners -- all of whom are Democrats -- are at the opposite end of the political spectrum from Limbaugh and other conservative hosts carried by WIOD.

With Ritter in opposition and four commissioners absent, there were insufficient votes to renew the deal.

''We don't have to do business with them,'' Ritter declared.

Responding to Tuesday's tempest, Limbaugh told his legions of ''dittohead'' listeners on Wednesday: ``They are politicizing the delivery of emergency news...I guess these people are making the weather a partisan issue.''

3. "I guess these people are making the weather a partisan issue.''
Why not Rush? You make anything and everything a partisan political issue.

Speaking of Rush getting kicked off the air. When are the Democrats going to cut off funding to broadcast his program on armed forces radio? They need to kick all the right wing shills off armed forces radio and replace them with left wingers.

8. Really?
You want the congress to choose the lineup for Armed Forces Radio?

that's a little scary.

13. No..but if they won't allow a democratic side to Armed Forces Radio
why should our tax payer money go to fund rush...He and Fox are the only two stations allowed to be broadcast overseas. Remember about six months ago they were going to broadcast a democratic side and at the last minute they cancelled it.

26. *Somebody* decides now what the lineup for AFR is..
Why not elected representatives instead of some faceless bureaucrat?

27. I presume
they have a program director who's involved day to day. I don't want elected officials deciding it anymore than I want them deciding what should be on NPR.

I looked at AFR's schedule, and it seems pretty eclectic. It's not all right-wing.

24. No, they need to get political pundits completely off AFRTS
Assume they put one hour of Randi on Armed Forces Radio after taking all the RW liars off.

Next thing you know you'd have lawsuits out the ass and AFN would be all RW talk, no music, no sports just RW talk.

Get all the wingers off. It's the only fair way to accomplish it.

(Personally, I think they should backstop Rush with "Bartcop Radio." He's actually getting good at it.)

And that is not a quote from anywhere in the article.

Edited on Wed Jun-13-07 03:03 PM by MonkeyFunk
should be finding the station with the strongest signal, and reaches the most people.

If this station meets those criteria, then they're being jerks. Disaster information shouldn't be a political football.

20. actually -- i think the commission has a responsibility NOT to politicize
the hurricane coverage -- the honor of being Broward's Official Hurricane Station -- by giving it to a RIGHT WINGNUT station. period. THAT, my friend, is politicization. not the other way around.

should this for-profit, right wing propaganda machine, reap the marketing benefit of being considered the leading authority on WEATHER NEWS -- the number one local news commodity? jeez. think about it. oh, and read the article.

7. Emergency broadcasts is NOT a business.
I don't care which side of the spectrum you are. All stations must air emergency news. Hell, NPR does it as well, and thats privately funded.

19. read the article -- this isn't about IF stations get emergency news --
this is about who gets to wear the CROWN of The Official Hurricane Source for the county most likely to be hit by a hurricane.

i know many people would rather die than listen to limpballs -- and personally -- i simply couldn't keep a radio tuned to a right wing station, even if my life depended on it.

9. As much as I dislike Rush, I have to go with the radio station on this one
You don't play politics with ER radio, and you shouldn't try to dictate what shows a radio station can broadcast using ER radio policies. Free speech and all. Besides, the entire purpose of emergency radio is to reach as many people as possible, thus you usually go with one of the more popular radio stations, and sadly in this day and age, it is usually one of the hate radio stations.

14. And Now, For Some FACTS
WIOD is not losing the right or ability to broadcast emergency hurricane information.

WIOD is losing the right to court advertisers, and impress listeners, as the "Official" hurricane info station.

WINZ, which will be the Official station, is owned by the same company - Clear Channel - as WIOD. Either way, CC gets the money.

WINZ has lower 12 + ratings than WIOD, but that doesn't necessarily mean there are less adults listening.

why isn't this going to a "public" station, anyway? no one should be given the opportunity to profit off of hurricane news.

15. What ever happened about Rush's felony drug charges?
I would think that would be reason enough. as long as they allow a felon to continue broadcasting and have influence upon Americans they should be shunned by all legitimate sources..It really doesn't even have to be about Rush's political propaganda but about his evading legal jeopardy and having that be an influencing factor.

18. You know, it occurs to me that rush once said El Nino
was invented by liberals to scare people. He said there would be no consequence if people just ignored the weathercasters. Then people started dying. Storms in areas that were evacuated killed some who stayed behind. I've always wondered how many stayed behind because El Dumbo told them to.

29. WRONG thing to take a stand on
the station's ratings are in the crapper and digging even lower

But they have quite the powerful radio delivery.

Hell, on this thing I will agree with Rush, they are politizing emergency news and delivery.

And yes I said that, Rush is right on this one... like a broken clock... well you all know how that goes
