Antarctica Cements Act for Gore’s Live Earth
In an effort to fulfill his promise of a concert on every continent for his “Live Earth” event on July 7 to 8, Al Gore approached the British Antarctic Survey in February to explore the possibility of flying a band in to its Rothera Research Station in Antarctica.

No, he was told, July is mid-winter in Antarctica, and no planes or boats can get in or out.

But all was not lost. BAS officials told Gore that a band was already in place on the South Pole. BAS press representative Linda Capper told blogger Tim Slagle, “We have a house band — five of our science team. They are very good indie rock-folk fusion. The remaining 17 will be the audience on location.”

They’ve never played in front of an audience. To make matters worse, the band, named after a Greenlandic word for “summit,” will be playing outside on the ice, where temperatures could be as low as minus ten degrees Celsius. One of their colleagues will film the performance for broadcast on TV and the Internet.

Live Earth Antarctica Revealed

by Tim Cashmere - June 13 2007

The 24 hour Live Earth extravaganza is nearing, and to live up to their quota of playing all seven continents, Live Earth Antarctica has been announced.

The indie rock band Nunatak will be the sole band on the freezing continent, which at this time of year can't be accessed by sea (due to frozen water) or by air (due to the freezing and thin air).

Nunatak are made up of five scientists aged 22 to 28 who are stationed on the generally unpopulated continent and play indie rock.

They will be performing to the smallest audience out of all the Live Earth's, with only 17 people watching them, although they will be broadcast out to potentially two billion people through TV, radio and the internet on the 7th of July.

13. a band named after a periglacial geomorphology feature -- love it!

I spent some time at a northern research station -- a surprising number of the biologists and climatologists based there were musicians and artists. My boss played excellent acoustic guitar.

This is the perfect solution -- MUCH better than flying in a group. This way, people will get to see that scientists are, as my surfing biologist roomie put it, "way groovy".
