Losing a piece of Lafayette history
Lafayette will bid a sad farewell this week to Wells Yeager Best, Indiana's oldest pharmacy.

The local drug store traces its history back 178 years, making it one of the oldest businesses in Lafayette. The downtown store has been a part of Lafayette longer than any bank, courthouse or newspaper.

It's been a part of many local residents' lives since the day they were born. In a new form, it will continue to be a part of the downtown scene, according to its owners.

Changing economics -- and in particular a government-sponsored Medicare prescription plan that puts independents at serious disadvantage -- is dooming many individually owned drug stores.

The economics and politics of the big picture can be debated to no end. But most of us would agree that with the loss of Wells Yeager Best, Lafayette is losing a piece of its history.
