I really gotta wonder, sometimes. Am I the only teacher not boffing the students? And this one was also named named the school's teacher by her colleagues. Perhaps they're reallyl impressed by how she reaches out to all of her students.

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (AP) - An award-winning female middle school teacher accused of having sex with a teenage girl was in jail Wednesday on five sex-related charges, authorities said.

Kanesa Hopkins, 31, who was recently named the school's teacher of the year by her peers, is accused of having a sexual relationship with a former student several years ago, authorities said. The sexual assaults occurred at both Hopkins' and the alleged victim's residences, according to a sworn statement.

Hopkins also was the girl's Sunday school teacher, according to the sworn statement.

6. I know a kid who had that happen...you wouldn't laugh if you knew how much it fucked him up.

It really messed with him,and the last time I heard from him was he was still having issues with it.Boy or girl,it's sexual assault and not a good thing.

There was a story just the other day of a female teacher who got away with a light sentence for doing this,and that double standard is reinforced by the attitude you display.It gives people the idea that if it's a boy being sexually abused the boy must have liked it.

Teenagers and teacher's seem to bring out some people's inner Neanderthal adolescent. I find it disheartening. ...and yes, often if the CHILD is a boy, no one gives a shit.

Also, we don't know if THIS teacher is innocent or not. Gays/lesbians are particularly vulnerable to false charges.

Would you respond the same way if the sexes were reversed? What about rape? Is a traumatized woman screwed up to begin with, if she doesn't immediately get on with her life after someone forces themself upon her?

A friend of mine was taken advantage of by a teacher as a 12 year old (many moons ago), and it screwed him up. He attempted suicide many times, is a recovering alcoholic, and still suffers from an eating disorder. Teacher-student abuse is about more than "sex," and certainly not on the same level as sleeping with a SO, or even some stranger you met in a bar.

If the teacher was abusing her power or manipulating the boy then there is a problem. Otherwise I stand by my comment about simple sex, if it was simple sex. I'm surprised by the Puritanical view of sex that many here have.

9. I agree that one should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. but

a smart person would not leave him or herself open to false accusations. I'm going to be a Middle School teacher in the fall, and it doesn't seem too difficult to keep myself out of situations that might lead to false accusations; namely, don't ever be alone with a student where you can't be monitored.

It sounds like, at minimum, this woman put herself into situations that, as a professional, she never should have allowed herself to be in.

With cases like this I would very much prefer to wait until more comes to light.If she's guilty there will be plenty of time to trash her.If she's innocent she deserves our withholding judgment.

I make that a personal policy.
I work in a high school and am hit on by the boys,
in not so obvious ways, at least once a week.
I think it must be the "Mrs. Robinson" syndrome
as I am old enough to be their mother.

One student in particular kept coming to the room when
he knew I was there alone.
I lock the door now and tell him I am busy.

It makes me VERY uncomfortable to be alone
with hormonal kids.
AND, it is their word against yours.

The solution is simple.
NEVER allow yourself to be alone with a student.
Male or female.
