John Gibson shocked that TB guy was a white American, not a 3rd World person w/ "ooga booga" fever
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 10:16 PM by marmar
If you cut off John Gibson's head, he wouldn't be any dumber. :dunce:

from Media Matters:

Gibson on "TB Man story": Usually it's someone "from the third world" or who contracted "ooga booga fever" in "some godforsaken hellhole"

On the May 31 edition of Fox News' The Big Story, host John Gibson said he was "mesmerized" by what he called "the TB Man story" -- the recent news that American attorney Andrew Speaker traveled by airline while infected with antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis. Gibson stated: "It seems every time a story pops up about somebody who has suddenly contracted some strange or incurable disease, it's somebody who is either from the third world, or was traveling through some godforsaken hellhole, and somehow managed to contract ooga booga fever."

From the May 31 edition of Fox News' The Big Story with John Gibson:

GIBSON: Now "My Word." The TB Man story has me completely mesmerized. I've been doing this for a few years. It seems every time a story pops up about somebody who has suddenly contracted some strange or incurable disease, it's somebody who is either from the third world, or was traveling through some godforsaken hellhole, and somehow managed to contract ooga booga fever.

I got dengue fever in Mogadishu, Somalia, just for instance. You tend not to get dengue fever in Los Angeles or Jersey City, I believe. So when this TB story broke about the guy flying halfway around the world with a super-serious drug-resistant strain of TB, I thought it would be the usual scenario. The guy's in the U.S., he's coughing, he knows he's got TB, but doesn't realize he's got incurable TB, gets on the planes. Headed to Europe, to a must-attend wedding, informed there that he has a bad disease, sneaks back into the U.S. because he knows that's where the best health care is. That's the narrative you expect the story to take.

13. I don't think it's all that "dumb"
It's racism, not stupidity. I can excuse someone for being stupid. Broadcasting racism is just plain old evil.

A saying that one of my co-workers always uses. But in this case, it could be a combination of both.
To me, racism is an indication of the most abysmal stupidity.

3. When it comes to health care the US is already pretty close
to a third world country. So if he really believes this bullshit he shouldn't be too surprised that American citizens are catching these crappy infectious diseases.

4. the TB victim
traveled to lots of 3rd world countries and is no doubt where he picked it up. Unfortunately he may have started a spread of the disease. Terrible thing. unlike most others I feel really sorry for the victim and his family. He obviously wasn't told...DON'T leave. DON'T come back.

6. I do feel sorry for the guy. He is a young guy, and he got a
deadly disease.
But even if he wasn't told he must not fly to Europe, he isn't denying he was told not to come back, but he did it anyway.

9. What grave risk? Apparently he is not highly infectious.
As for being shot for what he did? Are you freaking suggesting sick people should be shot?
It's not his fault he contracted it.

11. Why do you believe there's no doubt he picked up TB in a Third World country?
His new father-in-law is a microbiologist for the CDC who specializes in rare strains of TB. According to NPR, "he works on tuberculosis bacteria in his laboratory." http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10588684&ft=1&f=1003

That has to be the biggest coincidence of all time.

There's plenty of doubt.

he could have picked it up in Asia, because he actually visited hospitals there.
And Africa, India and Asia are where most of those TB cases are.

14. What ticks me off about all of this
I've been through that same checkpoint, coming back from Montreal. I was given the Nth degree on the way home.

Surprise, I'm a woman of color.

Yet this guy was never supposed to be let back into the country, and the border people let him in because they went to the Bill Frist school of medicine, and thought "he looked fine."

19. The 'victim' got a 'white middle class male' pass
I recall the story of the three SF women who were missing in a california park. While searching for the women, the park rangers or police stopped the killer and didn't search or question him despite the fact that HE HAD A SEVERED HEAD IN HIS BACKPACK. When all was said and done, it was obvious that his appearance as a handsome, white male prevented law enforcement from suspecting that he was a crazy killer.

20. Dengue fever
"You tend not to get dengue fever in Los Angeles or Jersey City, I believe" well dummy you are wrong actually. Dengue fever appears more and more frequently in the Southeasten United States as does things like Yellow Fever and Malaria. And oh yeah a little foreign invader called West Nile Virus. Do we have a West Nile River in this country? There is also a virus that's been a problem in the American Southwest called Hantaa virus. That one is named after a Korean River. Thank you "Dr. Gibson" for your insight. Ooga Booga fever indeed. Ooga Booga brain is more like it!:dunce:
