Could we here at DU declare a Peace or truce when it comes to "Cindy"?
Edited on Wed May-30-07 08:57 PM by Decruiter
I remember Cindy from a long time ago. She became an activist sometime in 2004-early 2005 after her daughter read her poem to her brother after he had been lost.

Cindy helped to found MFSO and GSFP . Cindy was asked to be a speaker at the VFP National Convention being held in Dallas the first week of August of 2005.

The first day Cindy showed up in Crawford she had the support of the entire Texas Peace Community. Cindy had the support of the Crawford Peace House that had been around since April of 2003. Cindy also had the support of the DemocraticUnderground along with the VetsforPeace from the moment she decided to make her historic trip to Crawford and "camp in a ditch". Cindy landed in Crawford at the moment a long planned for press conference was happening with one of just a few survivors of Hiroshima/Nagasaki was speaking at the Crawford Peace House on the 50th anniversary (or so) was happening on August 6th, 2005.

I have a daughter and I'm lucky she is not in Iraq, although I do support a draft. When we have a draft, then and only then will the people of this country start to care.

Cindy, go home to your kids, they need you and you need them. Take care of yourself and your family. Stop talking for a little while.

You've trashed the Dems, well deserved.

You are trashing DU, never acceptable.

If it had been not for the community at DU that rallied as fast as everyone did to support you in Crawford in 2005, your month in August of 2005 would probably have not gone so well. There were many members of DU that contributed much. Dollars, donations, food, and way more.

Once again, Cindy. Go get some much needed R&R.

Please stop trashing DU.

Cindy, just go and get the rest you need and come back refreshed and renewed.

It is in your heart to find the way.

1. "Stop Talking"
I'm not okay with any truce that tells a woman who's fighting against the war to Stop Talking.

DU is not above criticism. Sometimes there is some hella dumb shit posted here, and sometimes it's allowed to stay, and sometimes some hella dumb morans even come along to put that dumb shit on the greatest page.

You know how DU is allowed to criticize her because she isn't a member, and is in the public eye?

That's a two way street.

2. lwfern, I suggest "stop talking" to be .. Take some quiet time, Cindy.
It is not meant at all in a not kind way.

I've been here in Texas since the beginning. I am not a "moran" much less a "dumb moran".

I'm not criticizing Cindy, I know exactly where she is and how she is feeling, I've been with her, have you?

How many streets have you been on, lw?

3. I'm not sure "street cred" matters
Personally I have no street cred, but if we limit Democratic support to those with experience traveling (such a luxury) to protest we will lose our country.

5. You don't have to travel to be on the street in your town doing what
Edited on Wed May-30-07 09:38 PM by Decruiter
Cindy has been doing for a couple of years now. I've only been out there since 2001, I have been fortunate to meet those that have been on the street and walking for up to 30 years.

I'm not limiting support to those with the luxury of traveling.

It's up to us, "we the people", Gore has been speaking recently about this. Something about a crisis or somesuch..........

8. I'm just a little sensitive about the topic
Edited on Wed May-30-07 09:46 PM by djohnson
Personally I feel like a slave due to the business environment which literally confines people in exchange for getting by to support our families. I can't get out -- it takes me all I have just to get back home every day.

I understand why Cindy has given up -- in the media nobody ever talks about peace. And, politically it's hopeless, given the fact that ALL Republicans think war is a game, and there are still a few Dems who think that way too.

At the same time corporations which profit from war are very effective at keeping people like me constrained.

My only hope is that an underground force will push society back in the right direction and that corporations will someday realize the benefits of peace again.

4. Why do you say Cindy was dissing all of DU when it was just the vile
posters who attacked her? And that was on top of all the hate mail she was getting. She didn't expect to be attacked here in the place which had given her so much support.

Do you have some links to all your activism in Texas and your help with Crawford Peace House?

7. Thanks KoKo01. Yes I have the links to all my activism and help with
the Peace House. We've been around here quite some time. Since um, August of 2001.

Have you been to Crawford, do you know Kay? If you do, pm me. I'll get in touch with her and have her validate for you my "street cred".

I think Cindy has had a tough couple of years and it culminated this weekend. She read some harsh things and was hurt. It has happened to myself and my husband and we have quit for the same reasons. Burnout and loads of pain coming from every direction.

Peace.

10. I won't claim to be close friends with Cindy.
Edited on Wed May-30-07 09:49 PM by lwfern
I walked with her and Dede from Mobile to New Orleans. I have no clue how many streets that is.

"Stop talking if that's what you need" works for me. Subtle difference, and maybe implied in your head. But from your head to the keyboard and out through the internets, it's easy for that part to get lost, especially when part of the post is saying that what she's been talking about is not "acceptable."

more than just a few streets. (I guess you probably got to know Dennis, Stan, Pat, Freddie, Marg and lots more on that trip, I envy you, I couldn't make it) What I said was not acceptable was trashing DU over a couple of not nice people making harsh remarks.

What was not acceptable to me was trashing DU, no matter how hurt.

12. Dennis and Marg, yes
Pat and Freddie I can't place but I'm sure if I saw their photos, I'd recognize them.

I have issues with Stan. He shamelessly stole a chunk of my heart and won't give it back. :)

So, friends? (Pat drove the White Rose and Freddie helps with logistics).

Peace.

18. Ah, Pat I know then.
Friends, yes, but ones who respectfully disagree about whether someone has the right to criticize DU.

The tone of a forum is set by the way that it's moderated. I'm here, so obviously I see some value here. But I do criticize it at times, when it's deserved. Without calling out particular threads here, Skinner knows there are things on DU that I feel are sexist and destructive. I've been telling him that for a while, and I know he's not happy with the reaction from Cindy, but I do hope he will begin to connect the dots, because other women also have been trying to explain this to him for a while now. This is a more visible result than what he's used to, but it's not the first time a woman has been silenced in one form or another because of the tone of DU.

And I have some other complaints related to race issues, and in the way DU puts party above ethics as part of their mission statement.

I think it's worse, morally, to not speak out against such things - even if it means speaking out against a group that has helped you in the past - if that group is now acting in a way that is harmful. So I'm not only supporting her "right" to talk trash about DU, I'm saying it's important that she SHOULD speak out against any group that is complicit in the war, against any group that is complicit in sexism and any group that is complicit in racism, or any other form of oppression. How could it be otherwise?

controversy, this time. One can only hope.

15. I'm seeing the most ironic and disturbing posts on this subject
A group of people here at DU viciously laid into Cindy with various personal attacks, and yet here you are asking for Cindy to lay off criticizing DU. All under the subject banner of asking for peace on this subject. And you're doing this in pergorative terms to boot.

This place still continues to amaze me.
