Montel Williams berates Fox "News" for speculating about Heath Ledger's death while ignoring troop deaths in Iraq.

Well done Montel!

It is all designed to keep us from institutional analysis of government and private corporations or political activism.

2. I love it. He completely ate up their Heath-fest time. Good on ya, Montel.
By contrast, I was watching E's The Soup today (if you're not familiar, it's a hysterical weekly run-down of all the idiocy which took place on various other tv shows, picking out the clips that highlight the worst of the worst), and the host ended the show by saying (I'm paraphrasing from memory) "And of course, actor Heath Ledger was found dead in apartment this week. If you'll look back through all the years this show has been on the air, we've never once had a clip featuring Heath Ledger. So all you people out their scouring and searching for some dirt to air about the guy, just remember that. We'd prefer to remember him as a gifted and talented young actor that he was, and he'll be missed."

Now THAT's class.

3. Notice how, at the end, they ignored the soldiers
and talked of the death of the actor again. They were sweeping the deaths of soldiers under the rug. And don't feed me this garbage about "feeding the beast". I don't listen to celebrity gossip shows, and that is what the news has become. We don't know about Iraq because the MSM doesn't want us to know. Look at Brittany Spears and buy our products and ignore reality!

5. Montel is chewing out people for going for the salacious
and the accompanying ratings? :eyes:

Do we not talk about anything else, period, until all of the troops are home?

I think there's room to talk about both.

Listen, I'm glad he raised the issue, but I just find it a little hypocritical coming from Montel -- considering what I used to see on his talk show.

8. No fan of Montel Williams, PhRMA shill
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 01:36 PM by Spiffarino
Anybody who takes money from PhRMA to sell their lies doesn't deserve much respect.

I give him credit for putting the focus on Iraq war dead, though it was pretty much limited to American soldiers and not the many others who have died because of Bush's stupidity and arrogance. But I'm not ready to canonize Montel for being right about Iraq while getting fat off an organization that values fleecing the poor.

Edit: I will K&R, only because it was beautiful to watch the morning FoxTarts get their asses handed to them.

18. Phrma shill?
I'm not a big Montel fan, but that's because he gives a forum to Sylvia Brown. But on the shows of his I have seen, I have never seen him shill for big pharma. He's come out strongly for medical marijuana and for increased funding for medical research. Not once did he ever give any impression of being in big pharma's pocket. So I'd like to know the basis of your charge.

21. He isn't on his shows, but he does commercials for PPA
Which is a good thing in that it helps people, but many see it as a way for the big pharmaceutical companies to say, "look we're taking care of all of the uninsured privately, there is no need for government intervention." Of course there are millions of people who do not see that big bus pulling up in their driveway to give them their needed prescriptions.

At any rate, The intentions are questionable, not the work.

39. so he's a shill because of that?
Because he is helping publicize a program that most people don't know exists? I found out about that program a couple years after I had taken myself off my $70/month medication that I couldn't afford. Even though I had gotten diagnosed and prescribed through the county health clinic, no one said anything to me about that program. Knowing about it would have been a blessing for me.

42. He most certainly is.
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 02:07 PM by Spiffarino
The PPA is a cover for the giant pharmaceutical companies. They put it together to blunt criticism of their piratical corporate practices and to prevent a demand from the public to lower drug prices by allowing Medicare and Medicaid to become a large buying bloc.

They garnered billions and billions of extra dollars from that addition to the 109th Republican-controlled congress' heinous corporate welfare bill. Now, Montel Williams is helping them keep it on the books by making PhRMA look like it's kind and caring.

In order for him not to know what they're up to, he'd have to be an idiot. He's not an idiot.

44. so what do you recommend?
That rather than letting people know about a stop-gap measure offered to blunt criticism but that also does deliver assistance to at least some, that what little help there is be kept quiet? Are we playing "heighten the contradictions" here? I don't play that game. People always end up dying. Seriously, what do you suggest be done, using the resources we have right at this moment, so that no one misses not a single dose of the meds they need, not those resources that might come into being next year or the year after? People with life-threatening illnesses don't have the luxury of time, you might have noticed. Maybe you've never had to quit using a prescribed med because it was too expensive, but I have, and I would have been glad to know of this program.

47. I spent seven years without any kind of health insurance
Several years ago I was self-employed and making about $20,000 a year. The only money that I spent on health care went for my two young kids except once when I blew $200 to get stitches after a car wreck. I removed them myself to save the extra cash. I had double pneumonia during that period and didn't get antibiotics because I was broke.

You know what I wanted? Health care. You know what I want now for every American? Health care. As long as the US continues to make it a for-profit affair, millions more will lay awake at night wondering when their turn will come to get sick and become bankrupt or worse, watch as their child gets sick and can do little about it until it reaches crisis stage.

I'm not your nanny. Go figure it out. Vote. Bitch. Complain. Scream. Post here, there and everywhere. Write your Congressperson. Make your voice heard, especially to enablers like Montel Williams, who are more than happy to take money from the vultures that prevent Americans from getting universal care by making all shiny and happy with the privateers who milk every possible dollar from an underserved public.

49. it isn't unheard of
Celebrities have been known to donate their face to things they consider a worthy cause. Is Montel? Well, he has for other things, so maybe this one, too. I don't know, and apparently you don't either.

I am not a Montel fan. His continuing support of Sylvia Brown is a decided negative, and I'm not big on celebs threatening small town reporters, either. On the other hand, he is very open with his own use of medical marijuana, and is a well known advocate of its legalization. That is hardly in keeping with the Big Pharma playbook. So, unless you have some real evidence aside from your cynicism, I'll give him a pass on his motivation for having the audacity to publicize a free/discounted medication program. I can dislike the other stuff without having to think the worst of him in every situation. And I applaud him for refusing to gossip about a dead actor and demanding that a news program actually talk about the news.

Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 02:27 PM by vmaus
The (M$M) media's obsessive compulsive celebrity distractions are ridiculous. American Men and Women are being killed for lies and greed everyday. Montel did a noble thing to shift the drone of media diversion back to the real tragedy - The wasted deaths of America's finest.

12. Rather, THEY create the appetite for this garbage and then blame the public-!!!
Whether "girls gone wild" or brutal police shows --- or simple other nonsense that's been going on since the tube was invented -- it's all about distracting people from reality.

And, that's includes sports, of course --- hey, wrestling and boxing are back on TV!!!
Oh, joy!!!

Males in America are so used to being lulled by this sports garbage, I don't know if they can ever see thru it!!!????

Except that, we did see with election 2000, they knew where the ball was and it wasn't on a golf course or in Giants Stadium!!!

Good job, Montel!!!

Jon Stewart has led the way on pointing to corporate-media --- and let's keep at it!!!

It's ALL about ratings. Screw the news. It's the same shallow scene with the Demo race - it's the American Idol aspect. The only guy talking specifics on the issues is ignored. We only worthy of coverage of the cat fighting of the other two. Disgusting. Not that I'd ever watch Fox anyway, but I'm turning to the other "news" outlets less and less. They're all turning into the airwave emulations of the National Enquirer. Heh - I've got a brain and it's adjudged to have a fair amout of intelligence capability. I give a shit about this dead actor or Briteny or Tom "doofus-brain" Cruise or ANY of those paper puppet luminaries! When they start sending out FAN APPRECIATION checks, I'll start caring about what they do.

I thought the Montel Williams segment on Fox News was GREAT -
and the only problem is that fact that it was aired on Fox
News. Thus - it wasn't being seen by the many who SHOULD see
it. I sure hope the Daily Show and/or the Colbert Report
decide to air a segment and discuss it -- If anyone knows how
to get info communicated to Daily Show or Colbert Report --
please do so - I couldn't find a good blog for that.
