1. I need help. I watched the video you posted then clicked on another
related YouTube video that said Dr. King was a Republican -- I've seen that elsewhere. What is up with that?!?!

2. He WAS a Republican--back when Strom was a DEMOCRAT.
The Republicans USED to (back in the dark ages) be the party of the Black Man (or woman). That changed once LBJ did the "Great Society" thing. Then, the crackers left the Democratic Party, and Nixon ginned up that "Southern Strategy" and the tables turned, decisively.

MLK was a Republican the way HIS father was a Republican. Had he lived, he probably would have eventually run for some office as a Democrat.

8. Blacks and the Democratic Party is an interesting history lesson.
Edited on Fri Nov-23-07 04:50 PM by Drunken Irishman
Many black people were Republican because it was the party of Lincoln and they, for the most part, had far more progressive ideas than the Democrats. That did change during the Progressive Era, when to Democratic Party tried to out progress the GOP -- since Roosevelt (Teddy) moved to the Republican Party to the left. However, there were still many racist Democrats (especially in the south) and while the Democratic Party did make its shift to the left, it wasn't until under Franklin Roosevelt that many black Americans began moving toward to the Democratic Party. Even though, especially in the south, many blacks still aligned themselves with the Republican Party, but that changed in the 1950s and 1960s with the Civil Rights movement, that purged many racist Democrats from the party.

Of course we all know those purged racist Democrats either left for Thurmond's Dixiecrat Party in the late 40s (mid-50s, as well), or just completely changed to the Republican Party -- which is why the GOP is now known as the party for the Rich, White, Male.

11. I was thinking that was it...
There are, I am told, members of the Democratic Party in Indiana who are Democrats only because they are still mad that Lincoln freed the slaves -- they are Strom Thurmond Democrats.

:-(

3. They made their case to me
I'm definently voting for Lincoln over McClellan in 1864.

10. The abolitionists actually disliked Lincoln in 1860
But they voted for him, rather than allow Stephen Douglas or John Breckinridge to win.

Maybe there is a lesson there for people thinking of going Nader in 2008.

3 out of 5 Black Republicans have a blog stating that they are Black Republicans? Just another added perk of party membership and these are not fly by night blogs either they have the full financial backing of the NRC, after all if you do not get your mug out there to prove you are a Black Republican whats the use?
