3. I think a manned chopper is more effective
Just another expensive toy. They are still going to have to pay someone to fly it. All that support gear looks expensive and high-maintenance.

4. Drones are why RC toys were invented. I foresee the invention of five new sports, at least.
It would be really hilarious to see an RC flying Harry Potter go after some of these...

5. According to the following article from 2011, the video in the OP is from a news story from 2007...
Edited on Sat Dec-10-11 03:13 PM by xocet
It is an interesting video, though.

According, again, to that article (which, however, has a potentially odd sequence of publication and update dates below its byline), weapons-capable drones are currently being considered by the HPD:

New Police Drone Near Houston Could Carry Weapons
Author: Stephen Dean
Published On: Nov 10 2011 01:51:31 PM CST Updated On: Oct 29 2011 05:38:32 AM CDT

...
In 2007, Local 2 Investigates uncovered a secret Houston Police Department test of a different kind of drone, fueling a nationwide debate over civil liberties and privacy.

A constitutional law professor and other civil liberties watchdogs told Local 2 Investigates that questions about police searches without warrants would crop up, as well as police spying into back yards or other private areas.

HPD fueled that 2007 controversy even further by suggesting that drones could be used for writing speeding tickets.

The backlash prompted Mayor Annise Parker to scrap HPD's plans for using drones when she took office.
...

It seems that the mayor (the same Annise Parker: http://www.houstontx.gov/mayor ) still has plans for the use of drones.

The recently considered drones, however, are from a different company than the one which was reported in the 2007 video:

not from (as then) Insitu, http://www.insitu.com ,

but from (now) Vanguard Defense Industries, http://vanguarddefense.com .

Another indication of the age of the video is the reference in the video (at time index 1:50 - approximately) of drones being used "last month" to "snuff out" California wildfires: http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2007/10/25/wildfire-drone.html.

Here is the list of fires in California from 2011: http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_current.

No wildfires are listed for November of 2011 - only three small fires.

7. Good catch but it was just uploaded or else it would not post on the home page
I did not think it was that old, as for fires we did have a few recently but nothing as dramatic this year.

8. Big brother has arrived.
And he will be watching you as well as reading your mail and hearing all the things you say.
he is going to know who is gay and who is strait and who is left and who is right and how you like your coffee and what you eat.
And soon we all will say that 2+2 is 5 if that is what they want you to say.

9. Multiband frequency jammer with a directional antenna...
Edited on Sat Dec-10-11 03:57 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
Use a scanner to discover and dial up the correct frequency... or just use a wide spectrum jammer to jam all the possible bands. A directional high gain antenna will give you greater control and range. If it's military-grade hardware, it will likely use digital frequency shifting/modulation to avoid being jammed so a crude wider spectrum may be beneficial depending on the unit's signal filtration ability. If it's cheaper RC based technology the thing will drop like a sack of bricks.

Making jammers & receivers is actually pretty simple and cheap too - (god bless the internet). Back in the late 90's, when WiFi wasn't that popular and people didn't see the need for network encryption, I got free internet by building a directional 802.11b antenna and wirng it into my Apple's wireless card. I could log onto unsecured networks over a 1/2 mile away by simply pointing my antenna in the direction of the router. I heard of people converting old discarded direct TV dishes into 802.11 antennas and logging onto networks well over a mile away. Of course, this was before the days of cheap-ass routers and $25 high speed internet.

Another brute force method would be to use lasers (several watts in power) to destroy the CCD chip in the digital cameras. I doubt the cameras would be gated so it would likely blind the thing. 808nm and 445nm lasers can easly (and cheaply) be made up to several watts of power. Hit a camera in the lens and it literally burns the CCD. Aiming at a moving camera several hundred feet away would be difficult, but I imagine you could rig up some sort of aiming system.

FYI... niether of these approaches is legally permissable under the regulationos of the FCC or FDA, respectively.

11. I see you know the secrets of the Iraninan anti spy drone defense forces.
It seems like it really is that easy to intercept the intel from those Drones so why not crash them by jamming there signals.

12. most autonomus/remote FAA certified aircraft are required to have lost-link flight capability.
Edited on Sat Dec-10-11 10:07 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
In the event of lost-link scenarios (lost data link of several or more minutes) most autonomous and remote aircraft need to have the ability to return to base or fly to a predetermined unpopulated crash site. This is done to mitigate the problems arising from hardware malfunctions or signal jamming/hacking as you don't want the machine to crash into a populated area and possibly injure people/property... nor do you want an armed drone bombing unintended targets. The drones often use the iridium (or other) satcom networks for data communication in addition to onboard navigation capabilites incase of total communication failure.

This little police toy is almost certainly not going to have on board gyroscopes/acellerometers or sat-com to establish a lost-link flight capability. It's probably small enough and flies low enough that the FAA doesn't regulate it. At best, I would only expect it to have a GPS backup for preprogrammed autonomous flights or lost-link return capability... and GPS reception can certainly be jammed. At any rate, you'll certainly be disrupting the surveillance feeds.
