Unrest in Hamburg is not uncommon, the city probably has the largest concentration of anarchists and radical leftists in Europe, maybe the world.

1. This is quite nomal...
... in the Szchanzenviertel and in no way indicative of the end of European civilisation. It happened last year, it will happen next year.

I happened to find myself in Eimsbttel on Saturday night and I saw the police preparations. There were no fewer than 25 riot vans lined up along Fruchtallee at about 9pm. The police expected it, the locals expected it. Nothing to see here, move along.

2. Repetitive does not equate to normal. Why does this
repeatedly occur? Is any reason ever given?

3. The Schanzenviertel is Hamburg's 'alternative' quarter.
It's a beatuiful place to wander round on a summer's day, stop for a drink, visit a craft shop, etc. Unfortunately it is also the home of a large sub group of the type you see rioting (not protesting, please note) at the G8 summits. Every year at the Schanzenfest the usual suspects take the opportunity to cause trouble.

From the German Wikipedia - This is my quick translation.

"In July 2009 1000 rioters fought street battles with the police in which the police were attacked with bottles, fireworks and molotov- cocktails and in the process 67 rioters were arrested. Because the police were of the opinion that the festival in July 2009 could not continue to it's planned end, it was continued in September 2009. The second edition of the festival also ended in a large police operation, after which a police statoin was attacked and a large amount of property was damaged. In 2010 the responoisble authorities only gave their permission for the Schanzenfest shortly before it was due to take place. The balance of the day: 47 arrests and 14 injured."
