TSA stands by officers after pat-down of elderly woman in Florida

(CNN) -- The Transportation Security Administration stood by its security officers Sunday after a Florida woman complained that her cancer-stricken, 95-year-old mother was patted down and forced to remove her adult diaper while going through security.

Reports of the incident took hold in social media, with scores of comments on the topic and reposts appearing hourly on Twitter Sunday afternoon.

The TSA released a statement Sunday defending its agents' actions at the Northwest Florida Regional Airport.

"While every person and item must be screened before entering the secure boarding area, TSA works with passengers to resolve security alarms in a respectful and sensitive manner," the federal agency said. "We have reviewed the circumstances involving this screening and determined that our officers acted professionally and according to proper procedure."

1. "TSA tells daughter to change 95 year old's soiled diaper

before allowing her to put her mother on a long airline flight by herself."

Another way to describe the same story.

Weber wanted to put her mother onto a 5 hour flight, by herself, wearing a soiled diaper. Weber's not a good poster-girl for the anti-TSA crowd. If the TSA agent hadn't spoken up, the mother could have ended up with some nasty bedsores.

before a 95 year old woman got on a long plane flight with no one to help her -- except the flight attendants.

What a horrible imposition.

5. 95 yr old women neglected by her caretaker should be asked to change her Depends
Under the circumstances it is quite reasonable to expect TSA to at least suggest a 95 year old woman's Depends be changed since the X-ray revealed she probably urinated and shit herself. Given the fact it was a 5 hr flight it is unreasonable to expect TSA to let this aged person obviously neglected by her caretaker by not keeping her clean and sanitary for flight to occupy a seat next to passengers who paid a princely sum for their seats. Who would like to smell such an odor for 5 long hours while the poor elderly person unable to control her bodily functions expels even mor feces and urine! GIVE ME A BREAK!

7. They said the diaper was keeping them from completing the
inspection. Yes, there would have been a problem with letting her board the airplane in a wet diaper, but that is not a national security problem and it is not what the TSA was concerned about.

Their concern was that they couldn't get a good grope through a diaper that was wet and therefore firm.

The underlying problem is that people have to be groped before they can board planes.

8. So true
The underlying problem is that people have to be groped before they can board planes.

Sometimes we're so quick to ridicule that we ignore the real program.
