MSNBC Host Cenk Uygur and Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) discuss whether or not we should raise the retirement age for social security. What reforms should we really be discussing?

1. We should be discussing tax reforms...
...the rich should be paying a lot more. Removing the SS withholding cap would be a good start. Also wage reforms. A CEO should not be able to be paid more than say 30x what the lowest paid employee pays.

The problem with he whole raise-the-age thing is that for many, many jobs the fact that people live longer than they used to does not mean that they can be fully productive during those extra years. Can a construction worker really be expected to haul bags of cement at age 65? Or a secretary type with arthritic fingers? Or a retail worker be on her feet all day at an advanced age? An extended life-span does not make people young for much longer than before. It means we spend more years as old people.

3. So increasing the life expectancy means you'll be able to work longer .... if you can find a job!

And that jackass calls himself a progressive.

Of course, he gets a congressional pension and he doesn't have to wait until he turns 65 or later to collect!

Who needs Republicans if we have "progressives" and "liberals" like that in Congress?

7. The problem of thinking that raising the retirement age
will solve anything is that it totally ignores the facts of aging.

Its not like people 70 years old function like they did at 65 or 60.

Some people are very able at 80 and some have already suffered from debilitating effects of age as early as their 50's.

Some people can continue their labor of sitting and paper pushing in air conditioned and heated offices far past 65 and can continue to earn high salaries with ease, but some like police and nurses and waitresses who work physical stressful medium to low paying jobs are just plain worn out physically by 65 or earlier.

Jobs aren't a one size fits all kind of reality.

Take it out on the people who don't actually do any "work" for their living.

9. The only change to the retirement age should be to LOWER it. If Employers won't hire you
after age 50 nor 55 why not let them retire?
