1. So, how fucked up is it...
... that in this particular instance, Howard Stern is the adult in the room? If she does get the nod in '12, as the saying goes, as long as Obama isn't caught in bed with a live boy or a dead woman, he's in.

25. I understand not liking Howard Stern...
for quite a few reasons, but for better or for worse, I find that Howard Stern -- ever the performer mind you, and willing to take liberties with facts when entertainment is served-- has always been at the very least honest and forthright about what he believes and thinks on any issue. That is what I've come to believe after being an on again off again listener for the years leading up to his time on Sirius. He is almost always an adult on almost every issue, and will admit he is wrong if presented with an argument he can understand...

On the issues of Abortion rights and Civil Rights (including same sex rights)... and on issues of free speech (except maybe where the nuances of monopoly and media consolidation are concerned where I think he is just blinded by his own fame) Howard Stern proves time and again to be an adult with opinions that he voices very strongly if you have the stomach for all the chicanery that goes into making his show work...

I'm not quite so sure that it's fucked up that Howard is the adult in the room. He's almost always been the most honest and upstanding talk radio personality I can think of. Brutally honest? yes... Exploitative? yes... but honest nonetheless... in his personal and private life as far as I can tell.

52. Anyone Remember Columbine????
Edited on Sat Jan-15-11 02:00 PM by otohara
After listening to this, all I can do is say "YAHOO" Howard Stern has certainly changed from the time he stuck his foot in his mouth about Columbine. I worked at the Denver radio station back when this happened. I was kinda scared, we got some creepy phone calls and threats.

"There were some really good-looking girls running with their hands over their heads. Did those kids try to have sex with any of those good-looking girls? They didn't even do that? At least if you're going to kill yourself and kill the kids, why wouldn't you have some sex? If I was going to kill some people, I'd take them out with sex." Stern's comments led to widespread public outrage, and the Colorado State Legislature issued an official censure against Stern.

Stern had to apologize and as far as I know he no longer jokes about rape/murder, yet Limbaugh, Beck, and the rest, continue to preach violence against Democrats and never apologize.

2. I was listening to him rant about this...
Pretty funny. I've always thought of him as the ultimate barometer of the independent "moderate". He's liberal on a bunch of issues, definitely conservative on others and he's not incredibly politically informed about a lot of issue outside of ones that impact his own niche in life and when it comes to political issues he's not particularly nuanced.

While I don't put much faith in the existence of many true independents, he's one of the few and I definitely think his outlook and perception of things is (probably pretty unfortunately for the country) very indicative of a lot of people.

And I say unfortunately not because I don't like him. I'm a 30 plus year listener and a big fan of his show. I just mean because people not being fully informed on issues of the day is not a good thing for us to have a lot of.

3. As a long time Stern listener I agree with ya
Howard is quite self-centered and not that well informed about real politics. But I still love Howard even when I don't agree with him. He supported Kerry in 2004 and Obama in 2008 just in case anyone didn't know.

56. He also voted for Gore in 2000 and Clinton both times before that
While Howard admires some republicans (Al Demato, Michael Bloomberg) he is very socially liberal and i bet he'll vote for Obama in 2012 as well...

On a side note, i'm glad he resigned...Had he left, i would have kept Siruis anyway, as the variety of music is excellent....No way will i ever listen to regular radio again....Years ago i tried to listen to sports talk show host Jim Rome, that was painful..Couldn't stand that guy..

24. But even on politics....
I do think he's probably about 70% liberal to 30% conservative. He's mostly conservative on crime and the death penalty. I'd say he used to be more 50/50 but in old age he's mellowed.

Like I said, his political discussions remind me of most of my "moderate" relatives. They're not reflexively conservative or wingnut, they're just so not overly informed. And I suspect there are a lot of people like that. Disgusted by the Sarah Palin's, but still thinking that John McCain is probably a good guy.

The thing is, like most of my friends and relatives, when politics aren't being discussed I enjoy listening to him.

26. Stern has learned very slowly....
His stance on Media consolidation is interesting to take a look at, because he was initially in favor of Clearchannel taking the reins and owning as much as it does and then when it bit him he learned a lesson or two.

On Abortion Rights, Civil Rights issues, the list of issues he is left on is pretty long, but he is really also more libertarian than some on DU are comfortable with. I'm certainly not that comfortable with his libertarian rants, but I think what separates Howard from a lot of other shock jocks is that his on air personality, while still an "act" appears to be much more honest and straightshooting (to hazard a gun metaphor) than any other host I can think of. And Honesty in media -- however you find it-- is a rare find nowadays.

31. I am not Howard Stern fan, but this is the most accurate
statement of her that someone in the media/pop culture has had the guts to call her on it ...

Honestly, the word I use to describe her is Coward - he throws bombs from Twitter, never allowing anyone to actually speak to her, then plays the victim card with EVERYTHING - when she is wrong and called on it - victim, christ, these poor people in Arizona get shot, and ... SHE'S A VICTIM ...

50. I understand both sides. In the US, you cannot use the c-word to describe women or anyone else.
It has a different connotation in the UK and Australia but here you cannot do it. It is up there perhaps a paper-width below calling African Americans the N-word, etc.

What she says is certainly vile enough to deserve almost any epithet that one could imagine, the problem is, when you use the C word or N word, it stops being about the callee and it starts being about the caller.
