"There was a very strong push in those days for us to go into Iraq, and there was absolutely no intelligence, zero, that pointed toward the Iraqis." - Former Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Hugh Shelton

1. We're supposed to believe this revisionist distraction?
What a false meme.

Besides, after 1998 Iraq regime change was official US policy, and Clinton was in office. Bush was excited at having such a great excuse - the war on terror - to get to carry out that official policy.

2. Hmmmmmmmm
I won't discount this report so quickly. I agree there were lots of reasons for Bush to advocate a war against Iraq not the least of which was the Iraqi plot to assassinate his father when he was in Kuwait.

On the other hand, the PNAC had, prior to Bush's election, already signaled their plans to attack Iraq and secure as many of the world's oil reserves for the U.S. as possible. It is interesting how the Iraq war and other actions have done anything but secure those interests for the U.S.

Russian oil is going increasingly to interests in Western Europe not to mention the Russians will preserve as much as they need for their own economy. China has locked up vast oil interests in Iran, Latin America including off the shores of Cuba, etc. The U.S. has the potential to have influence over Iraqi oil reserves but only if we don't drive the Iraqis into the arms of a competitor.

3. Is that why BushCo tried various nefarious lies to sell the public
on the invasion of Iraq? From weapons of mass destruction, to 'Saddam is a ruthless dictator that needs to be removed for the sake of the Iraqis', etc.

Cheney was in the public eye urging public support for the illegal invasion moments after 911, and chastised the press for not making the public aware of the "explicit" link between Saddam and Al-Qaida: http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/06/18/cheney.iraq.al.qaeda/.

I'd imagine it is much harder to wander into the arms of a competitor when held up at gun point, but maybe that is just my naivete talking.
