No truer words were ever spoken.
Even though these (especially) rethug "peoples representatives" do not attempt to hide the FACT that THEY DON'T CARE what you say or prove against "the machine", they keep being "elected" as representatives of the people.
Not representatives (protectors) of the government or the corporations....
I see no difference between the former USSR's politburo of old and the US congress of today.
It is not representing the people. It is representing the government and the corporations (one and the same).
This is a man who is against "big government" (according to him) yet is a huge supporter of Big Brother...

2. Am I the only one who listens for 'cross messages' in these things?

It probably IS the military's official policy NOT to snoop emails etc on soldiers. That doesn't mean they don't have a wink and a nudge/implicit "if do you find something, our stance is that we didn't tell you to" ... just like with Abu Ghraib and on a larger scale, the entire Bush/Cheney presidency.

The publish an official policy that appears to be fair and upstanding but that really comes with teeny-tiny footnotes that the rest of us never get to see, saying that whatever any one "rogue" wants to do, they will be chastised but not punished because, as Johnny Depp says so many times in the Pirates movies (of the Pirates' Code) ... "it really more of a guideline" ...
