The second part of Keith's discussion with Howard Dean on the NYC Mosque two blocks from the WTC.

He says that the Sarah Palins and other demi-gods should not be part of the discussion. But Keith asked him who DO you have the discussion with then? Dean thinks the family members should be part of the dialogue, but Keith pointed out that Ted Olsen, a family member, has already come out in favor of it.

I think Dean has found himself, as he admits, in the position of being on the side of the right on this issue. I get the impression he is thinking about it a little more and now seems to have learned something about the Imam, who he acknowledges worked on Bush's Middle East Peace team.

Keith very correctly reminds Dean of other times in history when 'fear-mongers' tried to prevent people like Kennedy eg, from exercising their rights because of religion. And asks if giving in to those who would use religion as a weapon, is a good idea. It's a difficult position Dean has found himself in as he certainly doesn't want to be seen as agreeing with the bigots who started all of this.

It is a very good debate ...

1. That last bit from Dean about "no-one is doing this" (saying it's a front for terrorists)
Yes, they are and they are doing it on international TV no less, check this out.

Inside Story - Barack Obama and US Muslims
AlJazeeraEnglish
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jsAmNhmRRI

Last week, Barack Obama, the US president, communicated his support for the building of a mosque two blocks away from Ground Zero in New York, saying: "Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country." This seemed harmless enough until he found out that over two-thirds of the US disagreed with him. Chastened, Obama went off-message to control the political damage, saying: "I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque." On this episode of Inside Story we ask: How much of an impact are upcoming elections having on Obama and are Muslims in the US being treated fairly?

Here's http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=8976871&mesg_id=8981008">my review:

Well, I've watched it

And I thought Barry Lynn did an excellent job on him. Ibrahim Hooper had some good things to say but his anger might put people off from what he was actually saying. Bradley Blakeman used the usual Reich wing propaganda tool that dates back to early 20th Century Germany, http://thinkexist.com/quotation/-if_you_tell_a_lie_big_enough_and_keep_repeating/345877.html">repeat the big lie often in the hope people believe it. He made totally unfounded insults on Abdul Rauf calling him a liar and a "sheep in wolves clothing" (deja vu to the 2008 election) and he was called out on it really well by Barry.

I was impressed by the host and overall thought this Bradley character did a good job exposing the insanity of America's Reich wing misanthropic/bigoted/sociopaths. They hear what people say but they don't listen. They read what's written but don't reflect on it. They speak from and to their followers' http://thinkexist.com/quotation/-if_you_tell_a_lie_big_enough_and_keep_repeating/345877.html">reptilian brains.

I think it's worth watching and I'm glad I did. For anyone who hasn't got the time to watch it (plus for those who have) and want to know who these guests were...

2. I am getting the impression that Dean is not aware of how
bad and how dangerous the bigotry is and possibly didn't realize how he played into that when he made his statement. I am hoping that is the case because I've always liked him and hope he will realize that he has done quite a bit of harm by catering even in the smallest way to that kind of hatred.

Awesome post btw, I haven't listend to the video but will do so. Never heard of those people before.

I did check out the link to Karenina's post and want to add my agreement regarding Al Jazeera. The quality of programming is simply unmatched here in the U.S. Truly professional reporting.

Thanks for the links to it.
