4. It is explained why.

They were shunned and the woman wanted to prove her worth as a wife and woman by giving birth to a child. Selfish? Given the woman's life, she probably never considered it to be selfish to bear a child because life (apparently) sucks no matter what. In her world this mightn't have been so shocking a move as we imagine. There are plenty of idiotic things we do to our kids in this culture that must seem reprehensible to the people in hers. I don't like the story but I am surprised by the few responses to it.
