Intrusive photographer admits it: a government employee spies on rallies against Fort Snelling & immigration policies at the Whipple Federal Building.

He gets a "thumbs up" from Haukoos, lead Department of Homeland Security/Federal Protective Service security officer.

At Fort Snelling, the photographer admits he's a government employee but won't say if he's a federal employee, then refuses to show his lanyard (even though he says it has his ID) and he promptly runs away in his blue truck.

Same logic of "Federal Control" persists for centuries, but this video shows everyone can deal with sleazy spy photographers: block them, tape them, confront them about their chain of command.

Organizers try to mitigate his efforts to collect intelligence on rally participants.
Another element: Homeland Security radio transmission seems to order operations "systematically".
Could this man be photographing everyone for addition to federal facial recognition databases?

What data practices rules apply to this man's camera and his taxpayer-financed salary?

Amazingly, some people do not realize this conduct & aggressive spying on political dissent happens all the time even under a Democratic presidency.

6. It will only get worse.
It's easy for them now. They can read our sentiments right on the internet. They probably have a special file on some of us right now.

2. So how many pictures really needed to be taken?
so they have at least 3 cops filming and taking pictures of a protest that is going to be posted online anyhow.

What another freaking waste of tax dollars.

3. Notice how none of these feds with cameras never showed up at the teabagger rallies?
I guess they only spy if you don't conform or your not white enough for them.

11. that is because they are there as participants
When teabaggers came to protest obama, I was there with a healthcare group protesting.

and we were next to each other. this one guy came up to say rude things when I was telling a cop "remember when bush was president we were 2 blocks away and behind dump trucks and buses?"

and this tea bagger next to me had a side arm. It is legal in MN. And the cop was having no problem with it.. even though 1/2 of the tea baggers had been drinking. we were in downtown minneapolis and protest was in front of several restaurants w/out door tables.

5. Police State USA....
Sorry folks...this is what we have today. Damn, I'm glad I'm checking out in the next forty. This nation is really getting f*cked over. I used to feel sorry for the poor citizens of the USSR. They had nothing over us. I hope they can feel sorry for us now.

7. Spying?
Creepy - maybe
Understandable - Yes
Spying? At a public rally ? - Up for debate.
Aggressive spying - No

If one holds a public protest / rally one shouldn't be worried about pictures and video from anyone.
If the guy was acting in an official capacity (we do not know) he certainly should have identified himself. Just because he is a govt employee does not mean that he could not be there taking pictures on his own time.

Also, I would expect security and careful attention around any group that rallies, especially around gov't buildings.

With all that said - protest! rally ! gather! If the message is strong it should help to influence those "spies" and others that may / may not agree with you.

Amen for the 1st Amendment.

12. Rush / Hannity Rally
I fee like I am defending a right wing position, which I am not. I am trying to defend civil discourse and open mindedness...

Please do not be so quick to assume that this is a giant conspiracy against leftist thought / action. If there were a giant gov't conspiracy against the left, then how do we know so much about all the right wing militant groups that try to stay hidden in America? Surely all we know is not the result of only 2 years of a democratic presidency? The govt watches anyone / group that it perceives to be a possible threat.

I certainly believe it is debatable to ask if we have done enough about some of these groups, but for anyone to imply that the govt is only watching the left sounds foolish.

14. Thanks for posting my video
Hey thanks for sharing this on DU. Part of the idea here is to encourage everyone to confront these guys regardless of political orientation.

At a minimum it's a huge waste of tax dollars, and we really have the right to get his name and chain of command, as well as the data handling rules which apply to the pics he was taking. There are frequently guys like this, most often found looking out of place at left-friendly rallies, especially those featuring marginalized communities.

Re "Big Picture" he should still ID who the hell he is. He was never there to be influenced by the content of the rally. In my experience guys like this never really care much about trying to motivate social change of any stripe. "The govt watches anyone / group that it perceives to be a possible threat." is an extremely broadly defined problem, because they are claiming that everything is profitably perceived as a possible threat via the Homeland Security Industrial Complex.

And that is not even getting into the barrages of paid agents and schemers that are sent to mess with all sorts of groups and "drive them to the edge" COINTELPRO style. It is far far more than passive observation. Plus of course all the spying has a chilling effect too, which I am trying to deflate with humor :)
