2. It was a scarey....

book. When I read "1984" and "Brave New World" I wondered how it happened. Then I read Mayer's book and Sebastian Haffner's "Defying Hitler" and it all became so clear. There is no revolution or rebellion that institutes tyranny and despotism only evolution of evil. Those insights scare me because too many think it can't happen here either.

3. Read: "Hitler's Willing Executioners" by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen

The premise of "Hitler's Willing Executioners" is that" 1) More of the German people knew of and participated in the Holocaust than were willing to admit it after the war, and 2) the Holocaust resulted from: "a unique and virulent "eliminationist antisemitism" in the German identity." Please take time to reference people who've commented on eliminationist rhetoric in the US in recent years.

There was a chilling passage about "Good Germans" returning to their families at the end of the day, covered in brains and blood. It seems that, before the gas chambers and mass camps, there was a period where volunteers from the police and military hunted down and killed Jews outright.

Some of the comments by right-wingers remind me of this book, particularly Glenn Beck's comments about being a "progressive hunter," and Michael Reagan's hysterical hatred. We are in a very scary period in American history, maybe the most dangerous in our long history!
