Rep. Paul Broun Compares Health Care Reform To "The Great War Of Yankee Aggression"
1 hour and 33 minutes ago by Matt Finkelstein

Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) is a fanatical opponent of health care reform, who has suggested that President Obama might "declare martial law" and rule as a dictator. In recent days, the right-wing congressman has made Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) the target of his fury, calling her arrogant, ignorant, and incompetent. Last night on the House floor, Broun continued his streak of combative statements by comparing health care reform to the American Civil War, which he called "The Great War of Yankee Aggression."

BROUN: If ObamaCare passes, that free insurance card that's in people's pockets is gonna be as worthless as a Confederate dollar after the War Between The States -- the Great War of Yankee Aggression.

3. Do the new Texas history text books claim the South won the Civil War?
Wouldn't shock me.

4. Today guys like this are buying guns by the truckload imagining overthrowing Obama's America.
Edited on Fri Mar-19-10 11:02 AM by onehandle
They see the second amendment as the license for them to rise up as the new Confederacy and fantasize that they could actually overcome our military. (Which is a total joke)

These days, references to the 'The Great War Of Yankee Aggression' is code for liberalism, Democratic ideals, and of course 'uppity negroes.'

Georgia is Full of these people.

Broun is an ass.

6. God Bless Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, A True Son Of Ohio.
Along with Grant, and Sheridan.

Maybe we could send Dennis this time, to show them how to get it done.

But calling him a 'fucker' is a bit much.

Oh, you meant Gen. Sherman.

My bad.

20. Yeah, we blew up Hiroshima too....

But we don't have people in the US Congress acting like Japan wasn't on the wrong side of that conflict, and we get along just fine with the Japanese now.

8. That should not be tolerated in the United States Congress

You gotta wonder what a guy like that calls WWII.

The US prevailed in that conflict against a rebel force, and that man is bitching about it while standing in the US Congress? Are you f-ing kidding me?

18. Exactly. The south was committing treason and calling it anything else ...
should be considered grounds for his removal from congress. It's like pissing on the graves of the union soldiers.

9. Rewriting American History is the "hip" new Conservative (Racist) Trend--
Edited on Fri Mar-19-10 11:31 AM by Moonwalk
--Meaning, rewriting it and having those rewrites actually appear in bookstores and public schools rather than at Klan rallies. Also, as we see here, they want to make new definitions part of the common language (how very Orwellian!). We see this with the Tea Party folk who don't understand what the actual Boston Tea party was all about (they think it's about being taxed--actually, it was about being taxed by British representatives rather than those from the colonies). Same here. The argument is that the South had a right to succeed, and therefore the Civil War was the North aggressively invading the poor, innocent South that was just going its own legal way.

This does ignore the fact that it was the South that fired the first shots at Fort Sumter. As for whether succession was legal or not, assuming it was, then the South made itself a foreign country in that act and any shots it fired was an attack on the U.S. and an act of war. I'd be interested to know from such people why they think the invasion of Iraq was legal (as I'd bet they do) but not the "invasion" of the south--a much closer and aggressive neighbor to the U.S. that certainly had WMD's. And, as in Iraq, would have been seen as ruled by brutal dictators who were doing terrible things to an under class of citizens.

Ultimately, what we're seeing is a bunch of white folks who are scared shitless that they're going to be knocked from their position as "master race"--and Obama is most terrifying to them as he's evidence that other races can do that. They want to live forever in a never-never fairyland where only white folks did (and do) great and wonderful things and all other races gratefully acknowledge white superiority and where all other races are willing to remain in the cotton fields doing the slave labor. Where all the sins of whites can be ignored, erased or "spun" into something that was favorable or excusable.

11. Hell, kids' parents teach them in the South;
That Grant tricked Lee at Appomattox.

White Baptists go by a bible that still says African-Americans, and all people of color for that matter, are inferior.

Fundies and and do lie to you. They are taught that a lie to an unbeliever is really telling the truth (Where have I heard that before?) and they are only committed to telling the truth to another believer.

I really loved living in the south-VA, AL, FL, KY, AZ, OH...

22. Fair and Balanced. If you don't pledge allegiance to the flag, and
the republic (for which it stands).

Would this potentially make him an "enemy belligerent"?

Or is there a movement to relitigate the Civil War, in order to combat some illusion seen in the HCR bill as "reparations"?

And should I just go to bed??

Yes, I s'pose so.

G'night. Let America's blessings flow equally on all, no matter if they know what sky they live beneath.
