Grayson Introduces Public Option Act

Bill Opens Up Medicare To Anyone Who Can Pay For It

Washington, Mar 9 -

Congressman Alan Grayson, D-Fla., today introduced a bill (H.R. 4789) which would give the option to buy into Medicare to every citizen of the United States. The Public Option Act, also known as the Medicare You Can Buy Into Act, would open up the Medicare network to anyone who can pay for it.

Congressman Grayson said, "Obviously, America wants and needs more competition in health coverage, and a public option offers that. But its just as important that we offer people not just another choice, but another kind of choice. A lot of people dont want to be at the mercy of greedy insurance companies that will make money by denying them the care that they need to stay healthy, or to stay alive. We deserve to have a real alternative."

The bill would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish enrollment periods, coverage guidelines, and premiums for the program. Because premiums would be equal to cost, the program would pay for itself.

"The government spent billions of dollars creating a Medicare network of providers that is only open to one-eighth of the population. Thats like saying, Only people 65 and over can use federal highways. It is a waste of a very valuable resource and it is not fair. This idea is simple, it makes sense, and it deserves an up-or-down vote", Congressman Grayson said.

59. What's NEXT is up to US---and that means YOU.
I just wrote out (because I don't have a printer... you could print out several and save time) several notices to give to people here locally.

First, with the title to look for on youtube, to encourage people to watch it, and second, with the bill number... HR 4789.

Then I looked up and wrote out the local number for our congresscritter, and am asking people to call and ask said critter to CO-SPONSOR HR 4789.

In my particular case, our congresscritter, being the successor to Tancredo :puke: won't actually co-sponsor ANYTHING that makes sense. BUT, if he receives hundreds of phone calls FoR this bill, it will make it very difficult for him to vote against it, should we succeed in getting a lot of co-sponsors.

THAT is what is NEXT.

I hope you will make the effort, and ask others to do the same.

That is how democracy works.

This isn't part of the deal Obama made with the Health Insurance Industry. The Democrats voted against importing drugs, and they'll vote against this if it ever gets that far.

This bill has about as much chance as a snowball in hell.

29. Hey, that sounds like Health Care Reform
I bet that even paying the underwriting costs of the higher risk pool, the savings from skipping the executives cut will more than make up the difference. Now if Insurance companies refuse to insure too many, the public pool experience will only improve and allow for even lower rates. This is real legislation in the public interest.

This would be a bankable win for Democrats (at least those who support it) in November.

Thanks Mr Grayson, for giving us a great option to be enemy to the bad.

I pay $720. per month now, with co-pays on my meds it is $800.00. Those of us who pay for it ourselves know how much it costs.
If there is a mandate, there needs to be a not for profit alternative, this works for me.

38. Comes a worker bee......Sadly, in 2008 we elected Hope and
Change without recognition that the words were written on the wind with no real power behind them. In short, we were duped. To say more about our horrible mistake would serve no purpose. In wake of this disaster a new face emerged, that of Alan Grayson, a brilliant man, who speaks his mind with such clarity of purpose one is struck dumbfounded, wondering is this man for real or is he just another Hope and Change guy that will turn his back on his promises and people at the first opportunity. I've watched Grayson carefully. I believe he is for real. I believe he would work for the people and not be afraid of the opposite side, nor waste time trying to get them to agree with his positions. He is highly organized as evidenced by his work background. He knows how to cut right to the heart of a matter without constant needless embellishment of himself and his Party. He is not afraid of the enemy. From Beck to Reid, he will tell them exactly where he differs on no uncertain terms. He doesn't give long flowery speeches as if he were constantly running for King; rather, he gives concise statements which concentrate on exact opportunities and how he would take advantage of them. He has substance. He has believability. He is a keeper. I think we should primary him before we get kicked to the curb for 25 more years. If he were President, real healthcare reform would have been passed by last August.

66. Nice
It'll actually help keep medicare solvent because younger progressives (who generally tend to be healthier) will want this plan over private insurance, so we will pay more than we take out of the system.

There isn't much info about the bill up yet.
