MSNBC Hardball w/ CHRIS MATTHEWS - 18 December 2009: Matthews shows footage from 2002 of McCain denying senators Dayton and Byrd extra time, which yesterday, McCain told Sen. Lieberman, he had "never seen" in his 20 years in the Senate. Busted.

1. Rachel Maddow needs to talk to Chris and get the clip from him!
Tonight on Maddow's show she said that the clip was MISSING from the C-Span archives she instead of showing a clip she acted out the scene.

Seems like MSNBC's staff needs to work together a bit better!

On Olbermann's show before her show. What the hell, she couldn't borrow the clip?

42. Yep...
The clip Maddow was talking about happened just moments before this clip.
It all happened about the same time.
McCain objected to Dayton then Byrd talked and McCain objected again.

9. Matthews likes to thumb his nose at the netroots,
but I believe he just showed incredible ignorance. Wasn't the speak that McCain cut off the senator from West Virginia, Robert Byrd? And didn't Matthews mistakenly identify him as the senator from Minnesota?

11. McCain cut off BOTH of the Senators, Sen. Byrd and Sen. Dayton of MN:
Edited on Fri Dec-18-09 10:39 PM by Hissyspit
On October 10, 2002 — just ahead of the looming mid-term elections — the Senate rushed a debate on a war authorization giving President Bush the power to use force against Iraq. The resolution ultimately passed the Senate after midnight on an early Friday morning by a vote of 77-23.

During the course of the frenzied floor debate, then-Sen. Mark Dayton (D-MN) spoke in favor of an amendment offered by Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) that would have restricted Bush’s constitutional powers to wage war against Iraq. After a minute and a half, Dayton ran out of time, prompting this exchange:

The PRESIDING OFFICER. The Senator’s time has expired.

Mr. DAYTON. I ask for unanimous consent that I have 30 seconds more to finish my remarks.

Mr. McCAIN. I object.

Byrd stepped in to grant Dayton time to finish his remarks. But just moments later, Byrd asked for more time to speak for himself. Again, McCain objected, prompting Byrd to chide him for doing so. “This shows the patience of a Senator,” Byrd said. “This clearly demonstrates that the train is coming down on us like a Mack truck, and we are not even going to consider a few extra minutes for this Senator.”

33. McCan't may have had a functioning memory at one time.
But he has always been ethically challenged, viz. his treatment of first wife Carol and his up-to-the-eyeballs participation in various banking scandals.
I respect his military service to our country, especially when others of his generation who blithely sent hundreds of thousands of Americans to fight in illegal and unnecessary wars made sure that they never served where they were in any danger, except perhaps to themselves.
Bur frankly, I've never understood his "appeal" for so many. His much-vaunted independence was always only a cynical search for what would get him the most headlines.
His POW experience was what first sold him to the public. But he was hardly the only American to have such an experience.

*****
And I LOVE this exposure!

19. This is what I have always asked. How can you tell a Republican is lying?
When they say the same thing over and over and over again. something.... SOMETHING HAS TO BE WRONG.. SOMEWHERE!!!!

We are not cutting Medicare we are adding to it. We know where the WMDs are. No one here leaked Valerie Plames name. The US attorneys had performance problems. No one could have seen 9-11 coming.:smoke:

How do you tell a Democrat is lying? It starts with "Let me tell you how I will cut the defense budget...."

20. i'll post this here too. CSPAN belongs to US. It was hacked and there is stuff missing.
The objection to Dayton has been erased from the CSPAN data base. This is destruction of Federal property.

Its like some one was told to delete the Dayton objection but wasn't told of the Byrd objection so that is why it still exists. Silly Rs!! Not very thorough.

In any case this is, I hope, A FEDERAL CRIME. But not likely because a republican did it.:smoke:

27. Exactly.......
Rachel went to an un reproachable source for the facts but it was corrupted. That, like Rosemary Woods missing 18 minutes, could be a story in and of itself, esp if someone is rewriting history.

23. McCain probably thought he'd get away with this sort of obvious contradiction of his record,...
because for the longest time during his Senate career, back when he was serving with the likes of John C. Calhoun, he could. But that was because there wasn't teevee then!

34. No video, only transcript available for Dayton
That's my understanding...the Dayton video is missing from C-SPAN's archives. Only the Byrd video is there.
But the transcript remains (ignored, no doubt, by McCain).
