I thought of this song a few days ago, when I watched a man standing on a street corner, holding a sign advertising a 'Going Out of Business' sale for the local Blockbusters'. I saw the same guy - with the same sign - just before Thanksgiving. The poor guy was stamping his feet to keep the circulation going in the cold.
This is what the "American Dream" has come to for so many of our fellow citizens. Nothing available but low-paid, undignified, temporary jobs; in this case, advertising the end of jobs for the employees of the store.
The winds will blow cold through our cities this winter, past the boarded up businesses and the sad faces of the unemployed waiting on street corners.
By the way, I just found out that my company won't be renewing my contract after the first of the year! I've been a contract employee (few benefits, no paid holidays, sick days or vacation) at the company I was a full time employee for 15 years, until May 2005.
Good Lord help us all!
