I didn't see the Sopranos finale, but I heard enough about it to "get" this.

19. I don't watch the Sopranos. People who don't watch it will conclude something else
Frankly, I thought it was weird. I assumed that he was supposed to represent all the Clinton haters in the world, trying to make the partisan vitriol aimed at them look like it's only from uncivil, dysfunctional misfits.

What am I saying? Of course the right wing vitriol aimed at them is from uncivil, dysfunctional misfits. But in their defense, they're uncivil, dysfunctional misfits with lots of money to spend on private eyes and smear-job book publishing.

27. I don't watch the Sopranos either
but that last scene played over and over everywhere so it was hard to miss.

Even Jon Stewart had a spoof last week when he showed a senator "fading to black."

20. A nod to his health restrictions. and perhaps a nod to who's gonna be making the decisions.
This was all very carefully crafted. I won't go Freudian on analyzing what her contol of the carrots represents. But several elements are critical here: They show her in charge. She's dressed for business while he's dressed as a retiree (which in reality, he's not), clearly dispelling the image of her election as a sock puppet for his third term.

The hateful glare from the Sopranos character serves two purposes: it's a nice in joke to Sopranos fans (an upscale demographic the Clintons need for both the winter primaries and the fall election. But it also personifies the people who glare at the Clintons in real life with irrational, seething disdain. The Big Dog is sending an unambiguous signal when he shrugs away the irrelevance of such hateful people.

Next we have the song track "Don't Stop Believing" by REO Styx Journeywagon, or whoever the hell it is, which would make a great campaign song (far better than the crappy rock anthem that the diner scene set up to reveal as Clinton's official campaign song).

Finally, we have the crowning effort of this perfect spot. Hillary's crappy acting. She's stiff; she's formal; she doesn't deliver her lines well. I call this a nod to the Mondale principle of American politics. Walter Mondale once said that "voters from Minnesota expect you to have a shitty haircut." In Clinton's case, she needs to show that she's just a little awkward while playacting in front of the camera. It's a skillful approach to appearing genuine.

Mrs. Clinton's campaign continues to perform flawlessly. She's doomed to lose the general election. But her campaign so far has been flawless.

21. Stiffness here worked for her, actually.
Awkward is the new smooth. It shows she's not too sophisticated. Compare with Romney and (sorry, but) Edwards, who are silky smooth on the stump and could just as convincingly act out sentiments for entirely different political philosophies. In the case of Romney, he actually has.

47. Agreed
Not a big Hil fan myself, but its nice to see someone enjoying what they are doing. A little real humor goes a long way. And, since its been put up on every political site, well, its done its job. I got to say, given the choices she put out there, Miss Dion was the worst, but heck, if we were electing them by musical taste Gore would have had it long ago.

Obligatory statement of fact: I'll support her if she's our nom. I like her boyfriend. But she is a cold fiiiish; competence occurs within a human context, and likeability is important in the world of work too.

25. "cold fish" is not accurate.
It is the result of the right-wing smear machine that went on for years and saddled her with ugly, inaccurate characteristics. It is a shame that the power of the propaganda can affect even progressive people. If you spend anytime listening to her you would see that she is the opposite of how they painted her.

And "cold fish" I have never heard that description of men. Let's compare her to the other candidates in the same category. Is Biden a "Cold fish?"

Despite the doubts Hillary is a fighter and ultimately that is what it's going to take to get the foot in the door. We might not get all we want but as long as you keep the pressure on they can be persuaded.

37. So...what's the winning song ? "It's Money That Matters"
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 01:02 PM by EVDebs
If I had MY druthers, it'd be The Who's "Let's See Action"...but I can only dream. It'd be like a real life CSI for America, with the country being the 'scene of the crime', and the Who's song as theme music.

"Let's see action, let's see people, let's see FREEDOM and see who cares". Hopefully all of Dem candidates !

Unfortunately, with Hillary it seems to be Randy Newman's "It's Money That Matters" that wins in the end...

"It's money that matters
Hear what I say
It's money that matters
In the USA" (chorus)

http://www.lyricsdepot.com/randy-newman/its-money-that-matters.html

(I checked, actually the winner is "You and I" by Celine Dion, with the only good populist part of the lyrics being "The secrets I would tell", the rest is pretty saccharine love-goo lyrics)

"Let's see action, let's see people,
Let's see freedom up in the air,
Let's see action, let's see people,
Let's be free, let's see who cares.

Let's see action, let's see people,
Let's see freedom up in the air,
Let's see action, let's see people,
Let's be free, let's see who cares."

i think it is a measure of how far our political discourse has fallen that everybody thinks this is 'FANTASTIC!!!'

it is silly, sophomoric, gimmicky, stiff, contrived.

my complaint has nothing at all to do with HRC. it is that this silliness is allowed in the most serious election in our lifetimes.

(and this is not a spoof or an homage to the Sopranos - that moment is exquisitely crafted by serious filmmakers. this is just goofball mimic)

there, I've said my piece.

46. I was taught that people's movements betray their words ...
... and can't help but notice when she says she's "looking out for" Bill, she's shaking her head NO, as if she really means she's NOT looking out for him.

Her body language is gonna continue to be her downfall because no matter what kinds of platitudes she speaks in her appearances, or how many kitschy commericals they produce, she comes across as aloof in her gestures and stature.
