Obama tells doctors: ‘The public option is not your enemy, it is your friend.’

snip//

OBAMA: If you don’t like your health coverage or don’t have any insurance, you will have a chance to take part in what we’re calling a Health Insurance Exchange. … And one of these options needs to be a public option that will give people a broader range of choices and inject competition into the health care market so that force waste out of the system and keep the insurance companies honest.

1. I think Obama needs to take more control over this, and away from congress
I'm kind of thinking out loud here, but his approval ratings are sky high and congress' are in the gutter. Instead of letting congress hash it out amongst themselves, I think the administration should take more control here.

2. I think once all the varying plans are in, the admin will make a
determination of what they think is best and what will fly with the most support. I kind of like this though. Everyone's being encouraged to give their two cents-that can't be bad, and no one can complain that their input wasn't welcomed.

3. I think part of the strategy in this early stage
is to show that everything is on the table and everyone has a say in the process. I hope that as we move through this, that Obama will use his significant political capital to lean on Baucus and Conrad to get rid of some of the more conservative approaches. Up to this point, it seems like Obama has been hesitant to throw his weight around. I hope that mentality changes in the coming months.

4. I hope this works but I fear it'll fail for this reason:
the public option will get all the "uninsurable", i.e., people too sick and too poor for insurance companies to take in. The medical expenses will then drag the public option into the ground, and insurance companies will look at all this with a smug grin.

5. Egggggsactly!
Either it is universal, or "public option" is just a way for insurance companies to increase profits by keeping only the patients who are cost-effective...

This forces those who are "healthy" to have to pay twice: once for the public option via taxes, and a second one for their private insurance premiums. Any debate about healthcare should be about that: healthcare. So far the debate has been nominated by the entitlement of the health care industry to profits. Thus we will never have real healthcare reform, if a secondary (at best) consideration is the dominator of said debate.
