3. The torture stats are very worrying the issue is being framed wrong.>
Edited on Sat May-02-09 04:28 PM by cooolandrew
Nations that allowed their governments to torture eventually tortured their own people innocent or not. That has to be an endless mantra as fear is winning that argument. Republicans love to talk of slippery slopes, well this is a very real one where the dark whole can consume and devour for etnernity. Use the force. Regardless of prosecution this issue has to be in the disapprove column as the next time the ride will be 3 times as scary. Let's hope the stats were mostly from Republican voters which would probably ring more true. If not the case the propagandists are beating the public opinion into submission till they accept the unacceptable, well those journalists should remember the adage "..and then they came for me." Do they seriously consider their party isn't crazy enough to do it. Hell, the GOP spied on them left and right first on the list in some societies that went fascist. Yep even the Limbaugh would have to watch his back, they should be careful what they wish for they truly should.

8. One word explains it... "Fear"!
These people are being manipulated by our media into thinking that we have so much to fear unless government is given these powers. We have no other strong voices in the media that can intellectually dispute this propaganda. And most people are either unable resource-wise or time-wise to be able to do more thorough research for themselves that they don't have as much to fear as they are being told they should have.

7. As far as gun control, it may be because parts of the left feel gun ownership is needed too...
Edited on Sat May-02-09 04:54 PM by cascadiance
... if the government is trusted less and less... We have more the revisiting of the fringes of the Black Panthers, the SLA, and the Weatherman coming back now, where some people might feel that without representation they need to take up arms.

Now I think still a vast majority, including myself, want to see us reclaim the people's power more peacefully, but its not hard to see how the frustration we feel in being heard for others has them stop dealing with trying to work a peaceful transition process and instead look for other options, which might be why the gun control favoring numbers are going down.

Especially with all of the tasering incidents, and other very violent treatment of protestors, etc. that are going on now too (killing in Oakland subway, etc.).

14. It's also because people are becoming more educated.
Just like people are figuring out that the whole "drug" issue was a big boogie man, people are finding out the same thing about firearms and crime. It is far and away a drug gang problem and not a gun problem. You look at the number of firearms in circulation vs. the number of them involved in crime of any kind and you see that less than 2% of firearms and firearm owners are involved in crime.

The same thing with the whole "assault rifle" brouhaha. Which, by the way, I'm happy to say that President Obama has removed any reference to gun control from his Urban Policy web page at whitehouse.gov. People are getting wise to the fact that even though "assault rifles" sound scary the fact is that all rifles, let alone assault rifles, account for fewer than 3% of all homicides annually - nearly half as many as are caused by hands and feet according to FBI data.

And, I think you are right that even people with traditionally "liberal" views across the board saw how close we came to the brink after the last 8 years of Bush and have come to think that maybe those founders were right after all to embed the ultimate reset switch into our Constitution.

9. The torture numbers are amazing.
How can war-crimes be an 'issue?'

I agree, this is being framed wrong. The very idea that it is a 'liberal' or 'conservative' ideal to not torture suspects is bs.

It is a civilized ideal. It is a moral ideal. It transcends politics, or should.

12. Explaining The The Gun Control Numbers-
Simple- the first poll was taken in mid 2000. I can explain it in one word: Columbine. After Columbine- which was in April 1999- public opinion was much more in favor of gun control. Since then the memory has faded from the public consciousness, coupled with eight years of xenophobic fear mongering by the Bush administration. And let's not think the NRA hasn't been busy during that time either.

As far as the Republicans and global warming... Changing their position would be tantamount to admitting they were wrong and/or lying. Can anybody ever remember hearing a Republican admit they were wrong about anything ever? I rest my case.

13. Where is the raw polling data.
I have wing nuts on another site claiming these numbers are all wrong. I'd like to throw it in their faces but ABC isn't listing it and neither is the Washington Post's website or at least I can't find it.

15. Things the DLC doesn't want you to know.
I would not trust an ABC poll as far as I could toss it into the dump. Even so we need to see the raw data. The fact that they called it fifty, fifty tells you how far they skew every thing they touch to the right.
