1. I have no idea who Lisa Ling is, but I applaud her efforts to get this out.
I am shocked at the amount of people who don't believe me when I tell them tent cities have sprung up all over the country. They are in for a rude awakening.

"Jim" reminded me a lot physically of "Joe the Plumber"

10. she's been doing much work for Oprah lately.
I have to say Oprah has been doing a lot of "real" stories like this lately.

Lisa Ling was the one that Oprah used to do her work on exposing puppy mills....

they've done quite a good bit of work in the last year or so on expose type stories.

12. Thanks for all the info.
Going to check those other stories out. I am glad she has the voice she does. She seems very worthy of it.

2. Wikipedia CAN be your friend;
Lisa Ling "best known for her role as a co-host of ABC's The View (from 1999-2002)," and others including Oprah.

This is interesting;

Her sister, Laura Ling; "Laura Ling and fellow journalist Euna Lee have been detained by North Korea for allegedly attempting to film refugees along the China and North Korea border.<7> The last week of March 2009 North Korea announced that the two American journalists will be indicted and tried for illegal entry from China into the country and "hostile acts"

6. but for the grace of god.....
I am appalled that as a society we collectively do not insist on providing basic human needs to everyone. Because I am 'on the road' throughout the U.S. hardly a day goes by that I don't see someone on a corner or in a tent city or sleeping in a doorway... I do what I can, I believe that most here do what they can, this is a concern that needs a collective will to alleviate. Shame on us!

7. Also...
There are a lot of people living in their cars that blend in that you never notice.
In 1982 I was homeless and lived in my car for three months. I was working as a flag girl on a construction crew and kept my car parked along the side of the road that we were working on. Took sponge baths and washed my hair in the sink at the corner gas station and ate at fast food places everyday. Every now and again I would over sleep and when the other crew members showed up they'd knock on my car window to wake me up - they just thought that I had showed up early and was taking a nap. No one ever knew I was homeless and living 'on' the street.

11. It's rough living, eh?
I have a friend (lives about 3 hours away) that became unemployed early last summer and decided to move out of his apartment and live in his truck. He did this because he had money saved up, but didn't want to burn through it paying rent. So he saved his money moved out and started looking for work. He put down a close friends address on his Job Applications (friend was totally cool with it) and started looking for work. By the end of summer he eventually found work and used his saved money to get an apartment.

I mention this story because he said the thing he learned last summer was how difficult living out of his truck became, day after day after day. He said the first few days were a breeze, no big deal, that it was kind of interesting figuring out where to park, wash, etc. But after a few weeks it became tedious and stressful. You are always on guard, you don't know your surroundings.

Did you find living out of your car to be similar in experience to my friend's?
