3. Threatening the President is very serious business: So, where are the arrests?
Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 01:39 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Remember in 2004 when Richard Humphreys was in a bar in Iowa, and made a joke about a Burning Bush?

http://www.emptymirrorbooks.com/thirdpage/threats.html
Another man, Richard Humphreys, happened to get into a harmless bar-room discussion with a truck driver. A bartender who overheard the conversation realized that Bush was scheduled to visit nearby Sioux Falls the next day, and he told police that Humphreys--who was actually making a joke with a Biblical reference--had talked about a "burning Bush" and the possibility of someone pouring a flammable liquid on Bush and lighting it. Humphreys was arrested for threatening the president.

"I said God might speak to the world through a burning Bush," he testified during his trial. "I had said that before and I thought it was funny."

Nevertheless, he was found guilty and sentenced to more than 3 years in prison. He decided to appeal, on the basis that his comment was a prophecy, protected under his right to freedom of speech.

************************************************
What the guy in the TYT video share stated was a direct threat, not even a close runner-up to Humphreys oblique Biblical reference/joke.

Doubt we'll ever see the Balloon Man in the news as arrested for threats against the President :eyes:

Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 01:49 PM by ihavenobias
Cenk discussed this to some extent earlier in the week in this clip: .

Fox News and right wing radio was also all over this fabricated issue, trying to enrage ALL conservatives.

Although it has been giving me some good laughs as of late, Fox seems to be behind all of this, and from what we've learned, who's behind fox? Lets not let the Torture accusations dropped to be replaced by just making fun of a dying party(hopefully)...

I may not agree fully with your proposed statement on the rights agenda, but we should at least take note and not let them build up an army based on media buzz.. We have a responsibilty to stop Fox from pushing bad news, not from letting people express their rights...

17. My take on progressive shows playing right wing video/audio clips
Ignoring right wing smears, distortions and lies doesn't make them go away. We tried that for a long time and it allowed Limbaugh and Fox to EXPLODE with viewers.

The best way to fight against misinformation is to shine a bright light on it and expose it for what it is. I completely understand how frustrating and or depressing it can be to watch isolated clips with NO commentary. But that's one of the things I look forward to from TYT and other shows, the fact that I get to hear Cenk (or Maddow or Hartmann or insert your favorite host here) debunk the bullshit. That makes it satisfying, informative and of course, entertaining.

Having more ammo to fight the watercooler wars is a GOOD thing. And having clips to forward to people who don't realize how crazy Fox/Limbaugh/Teabaggers is/are is never hurts.

20. Exploiting ignorance within our present day media unfortunately in my eyes.
only creates more of a buzz, i understand and agree we should point out the lies they put out, and fight them on all fronts, though for one to accomplish anything in todays media/short-term memory fueled news, requires people to watch, and Faux is doing just that.. Getting people to watch.. Mainly, im thinking that the protests are funny, but fox is making out on it, and pushing agenda still by "working" the media system...

18. I am not sure what you mean exactly by "people expressing their rights"
But his so called right to say he would like to stick a knife in our President's eye is not protected under free speech. It is a threat against the president and should be dealt with by authorities. I hope you didn't mean that we should allow people to say these kind of things under the first amendment.

under GWB, no one should be saying that about a president, im merely speaking of the right to protest...

21. I don't think anyone here or anywhere else is saying they don't have
the right to protest. Infact I am sure they arent. What they don't have the right to do is threaten the president. David Axelrod referred to this today as well. He said this is something that can become "unhealthy" and he is completely correct, although he is being taken out of context by the media for that comment. This type of rhetoric is unhealthy and could lead to something disasterous. No one is saying they don't have the right to protest, they are saying they don't have the right to threaten the President, and Fox and other outlets are riling up this type of anger by their coverage.

27. There is no 'right' to threaten the President.
As far as I know, that is a crime. It should be as well. Cenk hits the vital points here. Where the hell are the arrests? If this were liberals talking about Bush there would be jack-booted thugs on every street corner for these protests. Look at St Paul.

I think we are swinging back a little to far on this. I think every threat to the President should be taken as serious as any other. These people may be 5 cans short of a six pack, but they are MOTIVATED. At least some of them.

If this is allowed to go on unabated, it won't be a matter of if someone is going to do something monumentally stupid, but when imo.

The racists have really come out of the wood-work. You could tell the last guy wanted to use the N word so bad he could barely contain it. I bet membership in the white-power movement is up as well. Sick.

These people are merely modern-day Klansmen minus the robes. They don't want to blend in with their crowd (which they certainly do) and not literally "wear" their racism on their sleeves.

32. U.S. gov penetrated up to very top by haters of Fed. Gov
The U.S. government has been penetrated at the very top for decades by people intent on destroying the U.S. Federal government. They don't even hide what they are all about.

It's why the FBI screwed up on the Oklahoma City bombing, World Trade Center 1993 attack and 9/11... because U.S. intelligence is penetrated by fascists using the federal government to destroy the federal government. U.S. intelligence sees everything... they weren't out of the loop on what the 9/11 hijackers were up to... they'd been watching them for a long time.

Bush was placed in power, so they could use him as a stooge while they wrecked the country from 1000 different angles... the Iraq War, Hurricane Katrina, the economy, Afghanistan war, Homeland Security, Torture and Kidnapping, prodding Israel to attack Iran, sending wealth up to the top 1 percent. None of this was an accident.

9/11 and all of the rest were preventable if not for the secret Nazis and Klan hidden in the upper levels of U.S. government that wanted the attacks to go ahead so they could get their secret goal of totally discrediting the Federal Government and giving the USA a Fascist makeover.

33. Garbage in, garbage out.
As they say. These people will listen to NOTHING else but FOX and right wing radio, because everything else is "librul". So this is the result.

It is striking to me the amount of arrogance these white boys display; there is a definite racial undertone. Obama doesn't "understand" the way America works. He's not one of "us". They'd much rather still have the last loser president because he is one of "us", right or wrong.

The South has always been populated by clannish people--I don't mean the KKK, just people who stick to their own kind passionately. One black president isn't going to change that, but maybe in a generation or two we'll see some progress.
