1. I couldn't hear all of this
because I'm at work and the radio connection was bad (no audio on our computers). Thanks for this!

8. Duh.
He was also a better poet than the woman designated as the official inaugural poet.

5. Yes, Lord!
I can't think of anything more beautifully human. I don't believe in a god in the way he and most do, but I do believe there's holiness in this.

12. I have many problems with religion as a concept
Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 04:25 PM by dbmk
But men like this represents a belief I can stand by. A trust and hope in the inclusive and loving spirit of mankind. That it will prevail over evil.

One of my friends, that had heard of neither Lowery or Warren (I am Danish and we were watching it here) and have just the same approach to religion as I have, said afterwards: "That was substance to that TV Shop guy they had on first. Respect."

14. I do as well.
I was raised in the Presbyterian Church but fell away when I left my Mother's home. But, when I was at my Mother's side when she was dying a few years ago, she kept raising her hands like she was greeting a loved one. She was in a semi-coma, but she had the most beautiful look on her face. Her arms kept raising like the "hallelujahs" you see in Church. I did not think she was greeting my Dad, her husband of 68 years, but knew she was greeting her Mother. I have no reason why I felt that, but it gave me comfort. And made it easier for me to say goodbye.

Who really knows?

18. Genius. This gives religion a good name!
Not to say that religion has any place in the political realm!
The dangers of belief are too great to tolerate religion in politics, and the founders knew that.

19. You realize, don't you, that the first few lines he quoted come from the song
"Lift Every Voice And Sing"

Lift every voice and sing,
'Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on 'til victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
'Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.

- James Weldon Johnson (words)
- John Rosamund Johnson (music)

(The bold-faced stanza was quoted by Rev. Lowery at the Inauguration's benediction)

is the best one could hope for.
