2. This is Backbone by John Edwards
"President Bush vetoed a bill that supports our troops and ends the war in Iraq that he declared won four years ago," said Edwards. "Congress needs to stand firm and strong. Congress should answer the president's veto by sending him another bill with a timetable for withdrawal. And if he vetoes that one, Congress should send him another and another until we end this war and bring our troops home."

After the first cut of the ad airs, the John Edwards for President campaign will then incorporate these messages into future versions of the ad, which will be posted on the John Edwards website and YouTube. Edwards' new, innovative ad does more than spread Edwards' message and keep pressure on Congress, it allows the American people to directly share their messages with Congress in an unprecedented way, and shows Congress that this message is not just from him, but from the American people.

http://www.johnedwards.com/wethepeople

It's being aired in the DC market today.

I'm so glad he put this ad up. Nice job. The fact that he's putting his campaign cash into trying to end the war is impressive!

We need to raise $100,000 in 24 hours to rush this ad onto the airwaves in Washington, D.C.

We also need your voice. Please record a short clip of you, your friends, or your family saying "we the people." We'll add in your clips to the online version of the ad to show the broad support of the American people for ending this war.

37. Nothing to do with backbone. Just an out of office ex-senator pandering to the base.
Edited on Wed May-02-07 09:02 PM by Clarkie1
It's incredibly hypocritical for him to attack fellow Democrats this way. If he had any backbone he would not have co-sponsored the war.

Reprehensible is the word that comes to mind.

Where the hell is the attack on fellow Democrats? Why did "reprehensible" come to mind?

So you are against this ad because it recommends that Democrats keep sending the bill back?

Edited on Wed May-02-07 09:32 PM by Clarkie1
It's just more of attacking good Democrats serving in office from the Edwards campaign. Clearly, Edwards is not a team player. It shows an incredible lack of leadership on his part. He's just pandering.

43. Thanks for explaining, Seen these polls?
I disagree. Why should he fall in line with the congressional leader's current strategy if it flys in the face of the public's demands?

AP Poll: Congress' approval hits high point http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-04-09-congress-approval_N.htm

Seen these polls?

Why do you think these numbers are now so supportive of Congress?

45. Indeed I have, and I thank Pelosi and Reid for them...and all our other Democrats serving.
If the Democrats send the same bill back, those numbers will plummet.

Americans want Republicans and Democrats to work together, and like or not that is what we need to do. We need to show we are not like them. The bill passed by a bare majority, and you, I, and Edwards all know Bush will never sign that bill.

Edwards is turning a blind eye to political realities for his own selfish motives. It's not helping the Party, but it might tear it apart.

50. If Dems go for impeachment at this point it will not help the Congressional approval numbers.
It will be seen as more of the rank political partisanship that Americans hoped they were voting out. I know that much.

The repub numbers went down after they impeached Clinton because it was a charade. The dem numbers went way up after Nixon resigned because everyone knew they had gotten rid of a reprehensible administration.

57. I have to disagree with you
The republicans will not "work together" on this issue, for the most part. They have spent the past 6 years giving Bushit a blank check on his invasion and occupation and they would look like fools if they didn't back him now.

If we follow the "compromise" solution, it will end up with the Democrats backing down and giving the Emperor what he wants. All that will accomplish will be to make the dems look like a bunch of wishy-washy, spineless idiots and give the WH the advantage of never listening to anything they propose.

The Dems in office have to stand strong against this tyrant and not give in to his demands. A supermajority of the American people agree with pulling the troops out of Iraq, and Congress should listen to them, not the Emperor throwing a fit.

64. Political reality? Here's one: The president of the
United States is a WAR CRIMINAL, he has perpetrated crimes against humanity. Political reality is what got 98% of the dems to vote for war authority and allow these crimes to happen. Political reality is what keeps their (dems) head in the sand and keeps them from starting true articles of impeachment against the entire bush cabal.

I've had enough political reality for one lifetime, how about we (dems) do what is right for America not re-election.

66. Americans want out of Iraq, and Iraqis want Americans out of Iraq
and Congress should stand up to the the war criminals in the WH and send the Bill back. I don't care what Edwards motives are in saying so, he's right. "Helping the Party" does not trump people dying. And I think you're wrong about "helping the Party" anyway - most people dont' have time to parse out the mechanics of Congress; they want someone to stand up for getting us out of there.

And I want to see SOMEONE talking about the horrific toll in death and destructions on the Iraqis and Iraq, not just American troops.

Person 1: President Bush isn't listening to us.
Person 2: It's time to end the war.

Person 3: Congress passed a plan to end it.
Person 4: And bring our troops home.

Person 5: But the President vetoed it.

Person 6: We want Congress to know
Person 7: We are with you.
Person 8: Don't back down to President Bush.
Person 1: Send him the same bill again and again.

Person 9: We the people
Person 9: Will stand with you.
Person 2: Because stopping a President who believes he can do no wrong
Person 1: -- takes people with courage to do what's right.

like John Edwards is supporting us, rather than asking us to support John Edwards. The Edwards campaign stumbled upon something brilliant. They'd be wise to keep it up -- it's highly campaign-able, and so much fresher and creative than the usual campaign crap.

36. I contributed and
forwarded to five friends ... it's about time someone stand up to Bush Co. and call them on their BS.

I am so sick of the corruption, lies, manipulations, fraud, and criminal behavior going, essentially, unchecked.

While the Admin may have been able to transform the GOP into a bowlful of mush, the Dems must prove they are not going to follow in their footsteps. And, after handing him his veto back to him on a not-so-pretty platter, they can start seriously investigating, and prosecuting, when appropriate, their unethical, immoral, and criminal behavior - not only with regard to Iraq, but, also with regard to Medicare, Katrina, trampling on the Constitution, etc.

after the November elections took impeachment off the table ...

"In an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pledged that impeachment of President George W. Bush was off the table" (11/08/2006)

Only a foolish or cowardly person takes something off the table prior to fully reviewing the evidence. Anyone can go where the wind blows them, it takes courage to go against prevailing winds to do what is right.

62. "We the people..." Excellent K&R
Again and again, and have the bill say we're out period. No more of this half way stuff.

Gone, bye, adios.

Ahoy understandinglife!

63. Boosh* apparently thinks God gives him direction...
...but now it's time for ShitFerBrains to learn that -- in this temporal world -- WE give the marching orders.

Send it back. But now, change the "October 1" reference to "September 1." And if he vetoes it again, change it to "August 1" before sending it back. Repeat as necessary.

67. What Bush and his lunatic followers
fail to understand is their reign of terror is no longer valid. Every lame excuse they've offered has been false. The 06 election expressed the will of the people. Bush's 2000 power seizure will go down in History as America's low point. His failed policies underline that failure. We the people have spoken. Bush and the Republicans choose to ignore us at the risk of never again holding power, that is if we ever have free and fair elections in the future.
This war is immoral. This Administration is immoral. America must find its moral compass if it is to be the democratic example that other nations aspire to be.

72. Best campaign ad I've seen so far. It is about action now not what they
...promise to do in January 2009! That's what every democratic candidate needs to be doing. Taking positions on issues that matter to the people now and hammering away at both they weaknesses of this pResident and those who support him. Key to the democratic win in November 2008 are issues they address and offer solutions to NOW!

75. DO NOT send the bill back. NO MORE FUNDING.
We don't want to US troops kept in Iraq indefinitely to "train Iraqis"
We don't want the pullout started in October (with loopholes for Bush to drive a humvee through if he wishes) we want the pullout to begin NOW. We want it completed by this October... and we want the pullout to be complete. No US military bases may remain in Iraq.

NO PRIVATIZATION of OIL!

76. Nope.
Edwards has it right.

Send it back. Go on record to THE WORLD and let THE WORLD know that WE THE PEOPLE are trying to END THE WAR.

LET SHRUB DANGLE. Then...REMOVE the f'in DICK-Tator and his cabal and Rendition their asses to the UN and throw away the key.

Enough already.

77. This is my personal tipping point
From "undecided" to "Edwards in '08!"

I'll reconsider if/when Al enters the race, but until then, I'm with JE all the way.

-Not afraid to tell the truth.
-Not afraid to take moral stances on issues like war and poverty.
-Not afraid to admit that he made a mistake.
-Not afraid to be an idealist.
-Not afraid to let America's voices be heard.

Exactly what America needs in our next President. (Though, strictly speaking, our *next* President should be Nancy Pelosi--I should have said our next "elected" President.)

K&R.

80. I feel slightly better
I've gotta say, when I heard about the failed override, i was more depressed than I had been in years. So to already see ads going on tv urging Congress to send the same bill back until bush and the other republicans in congress realize the game's over for them was really encouraging. now will reid and pelosi actually have the balls to do it? Or will they cave with a no-timetable bill?
