This is a great video about an ex gay success story. This kid dealt with the therapist head on. If you know someone who is, or might be, facing an ex gay therapist involuntarily this video provides a way to deal.

1. At least he humored his parents and for them to ultimately accept him is cool.
No, there is nothing wrong with him.

Attraction is attraction; it's what one does with it in terms of respecting one's self -- and respecting others in one's community. For people can be civilized or they can be animals. And that's my own unyielding belief.

4. I think many people...
Edited on Sun Nov-30-08 12:05 PM by TwoSparkles
...and especially some young people--may assume that a therapist is "an ultimate authority" and that
what they say is "truth."

It's amazing that this young man, at the age of 15, was able to stand up for himself and
to be uncompromising. That takes guts and courage that many adults don't have!

There are some excellent therapists out there. My life, and the lives of countless others--have
been enriched (and saved) by good therapists. However, there are some really bad therapists out
there.

I'm glad that this very intelligent young man was able to deflect all of that!

6. What a great story!

He is amazing. I have to give his parents a pat on the back also, it took guts for them to go to a counseler to deal with their insecurities.

I forgot to add, I think reparitive therapy is dangerous and we have seen no statistics from these religious groups of successes, failures and how many kids and adults have committed suicide. If these statistics came out I am willing to bet all sessions like this would be made illegal.

K & R!!

10. My brother committed suicide at the age of 36.
He STRUGGLED with accepting his homosexuality and religion. He had A LOT of self loathing.

9. We sent our gay son to visit a well known gay psychiatrist/psychoanalyst
in NYC for the weekend as a coming out present. Hubby, who is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, has known this professional colleague and friend for many, many years. He offered to open his Manhattan home--with his partner--to host our son for the weekend. We accepted. Our son had a marvelous time.

There is a right way and a wrong way to approach therapy for anybody--gay or straight.
