3. "Hayseeds" like Bill Moyers, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter?
They're all hayseeds. George Bush is not.

I love Bill Maher and loved this video, but we shouldn't take the term "hayseed" too literally. Maher was using it as a comedic overstatement, not a representation of actual fact.

6. The primary definition is "yokel" or "rube" which is by default linked to rural, humble origins
I'm making the point -- Carter, Clinton and Moyers all have humble, rural beginnings. My point is, Bush is neither humble or rural and therefore is not a "hayseed".

Personally, due to the fact idiots come from all areas of society, I'd prefer to lift the stigma from rural folk and just say
"dumb people". IMHO, we shouldn't identify them with "dumb" anymore than we (thankfully) equate being Jewish with greed anymore. It's
an incorrect, biased association.

8. "Yokel" is often paired with "local" - meaning they never left home
The term "Horatio Alger" is often the meme for the person of humble origin who did great things, like Clinton, Moyers and Carter. Not hayseed.

11. "Hayseed" is a general term meaning "rube" or rural, poor person
It had no qualifier. I've no trouble with Bill M. using it -- he used it in context (obviously, everyone knows the Shrug isn't a rube). IMO, it's as wrong to attach these slurs to southerners as it is to apply any other ethnic slur.

7. No: Clinton, Moyers and Carter all paid attention in school
Edited on Mon Apr-16-07 02:16 PM by Taverner
Bush did not.

Education is the determiner of whether or not they are Southern Gentlemen like Clinton, Carter and Moyers rather than hayseeds who "don't need no fancy education..." or think the Bible is a fine textbook for all disciplines of study.

Bush went to Yale, but pretty much bought his BA and MBA by way of the Bush name and the "gentleman's C's" that got him through.

10. But the "hayseed' implication is still there
It feeds a bias against southern people.

16. Methinks you protesteth too much...
If anything, it could be a slam against rural folks, be they Southeasterners, Midwesterners or even Californians (Taft, CA anyone???)

18. I'm fron California - LA, in fact
I "protesteth" because I saw the bigotry heaped on my Arkansas grandparents, born when and where "hayseed" and "redneck" were both much-hated terms. But it's the kind of cynicism that has been rampant on this board today.

I can't believe the crap being debated -- anyone whose people have ever been called "hayseed" will know it can be as demeaning as any other slur. Anyone who hasn't, won't.

9. K&R
I love Bill Maher. I don't always agree with him, but he's right more often than not and his bluntness is refreshing.
