9. Many expressions we say is a euphemism for something

As someone who grew up in a strict household where cursing was not allowed, I have so many such sayings that still come out my mouth. Sugarfoot, gaw-darn-it, dad-gum-it, son of a billie goat, good gravy marie, holy moly, and etc. I use the real thing some times, but these substitutes are still in my vocabulary. ;)

My parents didn't allow the curse exchanges either if they knew the meanings. That is why we got inventive and made up our own. 'Sugarfoot' was one that I started using after watching the tv show. Some of the ones I listed, I didn't use until I was out on my own. We were not even allowed to use the word stupid.

By the way, both parents used the word 'shit' at times and 'God have mercy'. With the word 'shit', we were told 'do as we say not what we do' and with 'God have mercy' it was said they were using it as a short prayer. Yeah, I bought that. :eyes:
