Fareed Zakaria, Editor of Newsweek International, discusses why Sarah Palin is "utterly unqualified" to be VP noting that in choosing her as his running mate, John McCain did not put "Country First."

12. The tyranny of low expectations.
If Palin doesn't freeze up completely or admit she doesn't understand half the words Biden uses, the Republicans will spin it as "exceeding expectations" and claim she held her own against Biden. And there is a real risk for Biden that the debate format makes the participants look like equals. They both get the same amount of time, and that makes it appear like they deserve equal billing, that we should listen to each of them with equal attention, and put the same weight on what each of them says. To distinguish that the content of what they say is unequal requires a greater intellectual effort on the part of the listener.

The truth is Palin doesn't deserve equal attention to Biden. He has real things to say, intelligent things to say. She hasn't said anything to earn standing on the same stage with him.

If Biden pushes the debate into nuanced, subtle areas, and hits her with ideas she's never heard of, she may well fall apart like she did in the Katie Couric interview. I'm hoping at some point she says she wants world peace. And for dessert, I want to see Sean Hannity cry.

18. Maybe it IS 80%
but does that reflect the competence of Palin or the stupidity of the Alaskan populace. Think Ted Stevens.

And yes, Wolfe needs a smack down.

23. Alaska has only about as many residents as Columbus, Ohio
if you passed out $3,500 checks yo everyone there you might get a 70% approval rating, but I think the school systems are a bit better in Columbus than they are in Alaska (fewer "salt of the earth" types there).

7. "She doesn't even understand the question." Thank you Fareed. I also like that he doesn't treat
this as a game but considers it "A serious matter of Governance."

22. Exactly. The time for games has LONG since past.
This woman needs to be called on exactly what she is time and time again. And that is woefully, seriously and FRIGHTENINGLY unqualified for the office that she is pursuing, and by default McCain has exhibited the same qualities as well with his selection of her as his running mate.

8. Fareed Zakaria is pretty sharp
I think he genuinely cares about the quality of governance and competence in running the government, rather than partisan gamesmanship. Partisanship has become so destructive to the truth. Of course, now that he's gone on record telling the truth, the Republicans will accuse him of being a Democrat and refuse to listen to him.

Please tell me it's possible that much of this partisan spinning is only a public facade and truth has some value in the political process. Where is there some voice we can all trust? If you're old enough to remember Walter Cronkite, you know what I mean. I find I rarely disagree with Zakaria, and often learn something from him. He should be running a news organization.

I've been hoping for an Obama victory partly so we can finally hear what people really thought of Bush, without fear of retaliation. I sometimes hear rumors of Republican anger over how much damage he's done to their party. But in public, they still hesitate to criticize "their" guy.

16. Yes. To his credit, I find it hard to figure out just which side
he's really on. He tends to be pretty darn objective and I think he's a whiz when it comes to Middle Eastern issues. The thing is, he's not only knowledgable, but thoughtful on the issues. That's important. And he's right, this is a very very serious matter of governance.

26. I agree
I find him brilliant and very well versed in foreign affairs. No one can question his expertise. He is recognized globally. As I replied to another thread, I am thankful he has the integrity and cares enough to speak out. His article suggesting Pallin quit the ticket appears in Newsweek, and yesterday, in The Post.

27. he once made a comment which seemed in support of same sex marriage
i thought he would make a good sec of state if Kerry got into office and think the same now.

he is an example that you can be young but still should understand the issues. he is actually the same age as Palin but he would be a lot more qualified to be PResident or VP (though legally barred because of birth place).

he is also Muslim but does not consider himself to be religious. that could explain the support for gay rights.

i think he is probably liberal on social issues. on foreign policy he might be where people like Biden, Hagel, Lugar are.

13. I doubt her approval rating is really that high
She rules by intimidation, fear and cronyism--and under those circumstances, you can never get an accurate, truthful, realistic answer. Truth be told, I'd say it's more like 40%.

Down here in the lower 48, where she has to go through us to get to the vp's office, we dont' like her. So perhaps she needs to keep her silly, all-shit talking ass up in Alaska.

21. Good stuff
And I'm glad he's not parsing words with the "but she's nice" and "I feel sorry for her" foolishness I keep hearing.

He is absolutely right that she has no grasp of the issues and that this should be "scary" for every voting person. Well done, Fareed.
