1. K&R, for the video and links.
All the energy of Plameologists, and that of an awakened corporate media, thunders ahead to the next chapter, and I agree that this is it.

2. Why use such crude and obvious forgeries?
It's like they were begging to have this document repudiated.

6. Well, if your intent is to hook a fish, you need to bait the line.
I sure hope we find out who really suggested Wilson for this assignment...

7. one theory on that
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 04:07 PM by rman
goes something like this, iirc:

CIA exposes the obvious forgeries, concludes Iraq has no WMDs. PNAC cabal has WMDs planted in Iraq, WMDs found, CIA discredited. However, Plame et al prevent the planting of WMD's. PNAC cabal takes revenge.

5. No, but Micheal Ledeen, neo-con PNACer, was.
Seams Like A Dream has done an extensive postings/documentation on this facet of the lies to go to war.

8. I'm convinced of 3 things
Not only is Bushco a band of physcophatic liars, they are just as incompetant at lying as much as all else they do. I'm also convinced that they don't care if they get caught lying or not, while daring anybody to do anything about it other than rant, rave and accuse them.

9. Pretty much sums it up, but I think we abuse the idea of incompetence
with these guys. You don't hijack the reins of government by being stupid. You can use the label to deflect willful criminal intent. Like the disaster in Iraq. Incompetent? Well, if your intent is to help your friends in Saudi Arabia, maintain control of the oil in Iraq, keep the price of oil high, and loot the US Treasury in the process....the appearance of incompetence could be by design.

11. You make a valid point

I'm only considering that this administration has always had the support of nearly every powerful national corporation, along with each branch of government. And even if the MSM wasn't AWOL for the last 7 years, very little if any of his policies would have changed.
But I am doubtful that BushCO would have been allowed to foul up as much as they have without that corporate support. I think those who pull his puppet strings mock his incompetence privately more than we do, but as long as he's making them money they don't care if Howdy Doody is president, and I'm positive they aren't incompetent. I believe that besides Bush, these guys are powerfully competent enough to also pull the strings on the neo=con think tanks that got the war started and who too have publically blamed Bush for his incompetent handling of Iraq both militarily and provisionally.

12. Bush was chosen for many reasons.
(1) Intellectually lazy
(2) A history of willful abuse of business/law (insider trading)
(3) Petty, vindictive
(4) Huge ego
(5) Willing to front Big Oil

All fine attributes if you want to hand over the reins of government to Big Business. I suspect that even they realize that gorging at the trough can eventually kill the pig. And deciding US foreign policy based on what's best for Exxon-Mobil's bottom line might not lead to an outcome that benefits neither E-M nor the citizens of the US.

Personally, I've learned a few lessons since 2000 -

(1) As we don't want government running our businesses, we don't want business running government.
(2) Lets trust the majority on who's best to be President.
(3) The Supreme Court sucks at picking Presidents
(4) Republicans aren't conservative, fiscally responsible, or moral.
(5) Republicans like to hide behind things (flag lapels, religion, and "troops") to avoid accountability for their criminal actions.

13. Your #1 lesson learned since 2000
is one that needs to be taught more and thought about by more people even if this is a capitalistic society, a society with which I have a no problem with until capitalists become cannibals.

I feel the same with relegion, whenever Christians (or whatever) turn into crusaders and
how Bush has tried to merge relegion into our government, while trying to keep Iraq secular.

http://www.counterpunch.org/leupp11012005.html

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica has recently published an exposé alleging in essence that the Italian military intelligence agency SISMI (Servizio per le Informazioni e la Sicurezza Militare) at the specific behest of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi provided bogus intelligence to the Bush neocons in order to curry favor with the U.S. and to abet the relentless drive for war between 9-11 and the March 2003 invasion. This follows an Italian parliamentary report released in part to the public in July concerning the forged Niger uranium documents at the heart of the Plame Affair. These, which purport to show a deal between Baghdad and Niger for the purchase of huge quantities of yellowcake, were it seems produced in the Italian capital.

The report names four men as the likely forgers of the documents (Michael Ledeen, Dewey Clarridge, Ahmed Chalabi and Francis Brookes) and suggests that the forgeries may have been planned at December 2001 gathering in Rome involving Ledeen and SISMI chief Nicolò Pollari. Also in attendance at that meeting: Larry Franklin, Harold Rhode, Manucher Ghorbanifar, Antonio Martino and others including a former senior official of the Revolutionary Guard in Iran. Here is a true rogues' gallery.
