4. He needs his Ritalin ...

George was obviously very bored with the ceremony. I don't blame him, I was too. But it's kinda his job to represent the nation so, it's a poor showing. Someone should get him a blackberry or something and install tic-tac-toe on it so he can goof off and look like he's doing something.

Needless to say, he wouldn't. But IF he did, it would be played on an endless loop. Blitzer, Candy, Gregory, Scarborough, Tweety, et al would be screaming from the roof tops.

Now contrast what Obama actually did. Go overseas, act dignified, did us all proud. No sullen faces, no splayed legs. How did the media react?

They screamed he was an elitist, TOO Dignified, TOO Presidential.

Conservatives have been electing the worst of the worst for years. Bush has not ever had any idea what this country is all about. He's got a frat boy, barroom mentality about the world.

Which is why the prospect of McCain, who is just one step above Bush..is so frightening.

This country can't bring itself to laugh the moran (sic) out of office, but that doesn't stop the rest of the world from doing it.

46. 89th Annual National Convention of the American Legion
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=3485522

I appreciate your efforts to honor the American flag. There are those who say the flag is just a piece of cloth. That's not the view of those who bled for it and saw it drape the caskets of some of our finest men and women. It was the American flag that we planted proudly on Iwo Jima, that first graced the silver surface of the moon. The country is careful to protect many things because of what they symbolize. Surely we can find a way to show equal respect for the symbol that our soldiers and sailors and airmen and Marines and Coast Guard's men and women have risked their lives for -- the flag of our nation. So today I join the Legion in calling on the United States Congress to make protection of the flag the law of our land. (Applause.)

51. disagree
Part of the mythos of the flag is freedom: and the rights and privileges this country accords individuals. Freedom from persecution, the right to determine one's own will, freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of speech.
It would be hypocritical to trounce the freedoms the flags stands for by protecting it with law. People should be able to make whatever statement they want, and if disrespecting the flag is one of them, it's just a symbol.

It would give the rest of the world a good belly laugh if we did make such a law though.

being denied to me. If you think I have freedom of speech since I'm posting here, you have no idea what I'm not posting.
If you believe I have freedom of thought you are not aware of certain technologies. Additionally the freedom to determine ones will has been removed in my life, unless the will to determine if I will suffer for this post counts. And, my freedom of religion has been curtailed, since the freedom of thought and movement have been compromised.

I have written here about some of this. It is about half way down at this link, after the campaign cash remarks.

73. I agree 100%
"If you think I have freeddom of speech..." Me too, there is alot I DON'T say here or anywhere anymore, because it sounds too close to "fightin' wurds" to this administration.

I have no freedom when I can't afford to pay my electric bill or rent even though I have two jobs and take on extra freelance work when I can..., I have no freedom when I have to struggle raising 3 kids alone and the government can't "do" anything but send a letter to their father who abandoned us. I have no freedom when I have to ask my parents to help me pay for a simple oil change on my car (thank Gawd for them!)...the list goes on & on

My only freedom is to "pull myself up by the bootstraps" or "find a good man to take care of you" etc...

I HOPE that change in the White House (read:Obama!) will give me back some basic freedoms, but I am also not holding my breath because poverty is a deep hole my friend, and more than a few have fallen into it since B** took office.

107. understood
I get it, thats why I described the "mythos" of what the flag stands for. Its for these very reasons you bring up that people should be able to make statements critical of our way of life, using the flag-- without being punished by the legal system.

You shouldn't throw a disabled vietnam vet who is making a statement by wearing flag underpants into jail. The original posters idea would lead inevitably to that. Part of the problem with free speech is that it can offend people. I understand, but thats not a problem that the law should be used to fix, because the idea of freedom of speech (however poorly we have been implementing it lately) is too important.

Our way of life is not sacred, and does not need legal protection. I think our democracy should be constantly examined and improved-- its not the end-all of good fair smart government, something better will arise someday. It's just so damn slow evolving.

50. I noticed that, too.
I also kept yelling at the TV, "Put your damn legs together!" None of the other world leaders was treating the viewing public to a crotch shot.

I also noticed that when the Iraqi team was introduced, he leaned over toward Laura and smirked. What the heck kind of reaction is that?

He didn't even try to hide his boredom. First of all, how could you be bored if you're at the opening ceremony of the Olympics? Second, try to look presidential and at least act interested.

It is just a thing, but he should know better. The other end of the political spectrum would make a complete shitstorm of it, and the media would run with it had it been a "liberal extremist". Did I just coin a term? Can we start calling them republican extremists?

in comparison to the way he has abused our country. Besides, if you haven't noticed, there are two sets of rules: one set for Bush and his entourage and enablers, and the other for the rest of us.

64. No, it isn't just a piece of cloth - it's a symbol of the USA and it is his duty to respect it.
Plus, as many others here have said - just let a Democrat be seen doing that and hear the howls.

68. erm, it is actually just a piece of cloth.
If it was a real flag, with embroidered stars and individual pieces of cloth for the stripes, that would be a bit different.

This is some crappy mass produced replica that was probably made in China.

Which, when you think of it, is fairly symbolic in its own way.

100. I have to agree...
to me patriotism is deeper than just a flag. And in one case it looks like he was autographing the flag for someone. I won't gig him for that. But I am upset at his wiping his butt on my civil rights and the Constitution. All things considered, he represented our country poorly. I didn't watch it but my daughter said that when the US athletes passed Bush, it looked like no one waved at him-everyone ignored him. Now THAT is something I want to see. She said she laughed her butt off. Anyone else see that?

63. Perfectly ironic (or not)
After all the emphasis on flag desecration and the wrapping of atrocious agendas in the flag, it's only fitting to catch Dubbie doing this....

But it's a fitting gesture for what he has done with our country over the past 8 years.

some people don't see it that way. I will say this though, while he is representing our country on an global scale he should know better than to use it as a fly swatter.

86. Again, on its own, Bush's treatment of the flag is no big deal.
But everyone knows damned well that if Obama was seen doing the same thing, the RW talk show hosts and the knuckle-draggers that follow them would have a fit over this 24/7 for weeks. And the MSM gerbils would only be too happy to give this incident the coverage.

Don't think so? What about the non-issue over whether or not Obama wears a flag lapel pin. The amazing thing is, many of the idiots who were taking him to task over this were not wearing flag lapel pins themselves.
