We ALL know the ad called Obama an uppity black man who does not know his place but the pundits don't dare say it out loud because this is the ONLY way McCain can keep the race close.

If the pundits say "McCain is saying blacks don't know their place" the race becomes about McCain and if that happens, its over.

At least Gergen is willing to do so.

....indeed recognizes when Fox News called Obama "exotic", what they meant. It's quite clear that the GOP is trying to paint Obama as different, and uppity and not in his "place". They don't have to actually point out he's black to play the race card.

No, he doesn't have to actually point out that Barack Obama is black (or more specifically, biracial), but lots of people will "get it" nevertheless.
