Barack Obama tells reporters in Florida that the McCain camp is not racist but cynical and is diverting from talking about the real issues because McCain doesn't have any new ideas on how to deal with the economy, jobs...

"In no way do I think John McCain's campaign was racist. I think they are cynical," Obama said.

"I'm young, I'm new to the national scene,'' Obama said. "My name is Barack Obama. I was born in Hawaii. I spent time in Indonesia. I do not have the typical biography of a presidential candidate. What that means is, I am unfamiliar, and people are still trying to get a fix on who I am... So... what has been an approach of the McCain campaign is to say, 'He's risky,' to try to divert focus from the fact that they don't have any ideas for dealing with the economy, or dealing with education...

"The one thing we know about the team that John McCain has assembled, because it's a carry-over from some of the folks who have worked on the Bush campaigns,'' Obama said at a press conference at Cape Canaveral, Fla. "They are very good at negative campaigns They are not so good at governing. If you think about this week, what they have been good at is distracting... (Jobs are being lost) and what was being talked about was Paris and Britney. They are clever about distracting people from the issues that really matter in peoples' lives.

"I want to talk about how we're going to put more money in people's pockets... how we can provide health care for people who don't have it,'' Obama said at the brief press conference, where he confessed that he is "beat'' after a hard week of campaigning and fielded just a few questions. "We have some of the biggest challenges that certainly I've seen in my lifetime. That is what the American people want to hear. What are the solutions to these big problems.'' Obama voiced "confidence'' that the determinant factor in the election will be voters deciding who has the answers.

3. Yes, but...
Obama has to be very careful not to make accusations of racism. Even when he doesn't, they accuse him of "playing the race card."

I think Obama was wise to focus on McCain's cynicism and his same old, Rovian politics.

McCain's bitter, confused, cynical, same old politics will not bring about change and there is nothing more the American people want, than change.

10. This white man say: "Heck yeah, they are racist" OR working the...
...racist angle. They are not being overt like they could have been years ago, like, "Oh lawsey, he's gonna go after the white wimmen" or "You know they get to drinkkin' and just go crazy". They are using something that I would describe as "code".

Example: If Obama is a "celebrity", why not compare him to 2 male celebrities that have done questionable antics? Oh no, they show him side by side with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, who just happen to be two attractive blond white wimmen.

Why do I think this so strongly? After years of wearing the "uniform" you overhear things that would probably not be spoken with any "colored" around. Heck, my own sister is racist, although she would never admit it to herself.

2. good job, Barack...
well said points...

"where he confessed that he is "beat'' after a hard week of campaigning"...
I hope he gets back home and gets some rest tomorrow...
He hasn't really had an opportunity to rest up from his overseas travels.

there's a long road until Nov...he has to pace himself and take good care!

9. Pretty much

At the same time, I think Obama has done well not to dwell on the racism coming from the other side during this campaign. The broader argument he is making is more effective---more voters will really hear it and accept it.

5. Perfectly handled.
(1) Defuse the racism theme and replace it with cynicism.

(2) Refocus on the real issues.

(3) Shine a spotlight on the utter incompetence of McSame and the reTHUGs with regard to real issues.

:applause: GObama!

11. I'm glad he did this

But you would think in this day and age he wouldn't have to. What's next? Will he have to cut himself to show his blood is red.
