1. I miss HIGNFY
As a British expat living in the US, that's the one British show I wish we had over here instead of shite like Last of the Summer Wine and The Vicar of Dibley. Thanks for helping curb my withdrawal symptoms.

12. There's a whole slew of excerpts at YouTube.
Snippets not as good as seeing the whole show, I imagine, but it's something.

I forget where I first saw this showed linked...it might've been here at DU...I then spent an hour or so at YouTube watching every excerpt & laughing hysterically. I had never seen these guys before. I wish there were a way to get videos or DVDs, the way you can buy whole seasons of the Sopranos (and as an expat, couldn't you get somebody back home to tape off the tv for you? Or is there a problem with format?)

13. They tried to make an American version
It would have been hosted by Norm McDonald, but sadly never got past the pilot stage. Damn shame, it would have gone great on Comedy Central, next to The Daily Show and Colbert Report.

Btw, in case anyone didn't get the final gag, "Celebrity Squares" was the British version of Hollywood Squares.

16. Me too!
I couldn't believe it when I got over here and all BBC America seem to show is endless Benny Hill and "Whose Line is it Anyway?" I couldn't believe it when I saw they were showing "Hetty Wainthrop Investigates." I mean, honestly. With all the programming the Beeb has in it's archives, is that really the best they can do?

HIGNFY would be a welcome change. Maybe they could stretch to QI while they're at it.

17. BBC America's website allows you to request programmes
I have already put my vote in for HIGNFY. Maybe if enough DUers do the same, they might sit up and take notice.

3. I don't have DSL, so it's a major inconvenience to watch these things. I would
appreciate someone posting at least a one sentence summary of the content. Thanks!

4. First of all
it may help you to know exactly what "Have I got news for you" is as a program : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Have_I_Got_News_For_You

This particular episode concerns amongst other things the gibberish that Bush and Rumsfeld etc speak. Hope that helps. :)

5. I have to agree... So many videos being posted with no
explanation or comment.... Sort of like when someone posts nothing more than a link--very frustrating.

7. Just want to add that I'm interested in this one in particular, because I am
skeptical of the view that Rumsfeld's departure had anything to do with the '06 midterms. For one thing, Iraq war policy has not changed--to conform to the views of 70% of the American people--but is going in the OTHER direction, AWAY from the antiwar consensus of the mid-terms, toward escalation. And for another, when did the Bush Junta EVER give a goddamn what the American people think?

Ergo, I am wondering what DID prompt Rumsfeld's departure? Possibilities:

1. He is the true mastermind of the Plame and Brewster-Jennings outings (the destruction of our international network of WMD counter-proliferation agents/contacts), and Cheney & Co. were just its political end; something in the current Libby trial is about to point this way--at Rumsfeld--and Rumsfeld was moved out of the way to preserve the cover story that the outings were primarily motivated by politics.

2. That Rumsfeld's failure to plant WMDs in Iraq--to be "found" by the U.S. troops who were "hunting" for them--was so incompetent--leading to the potential exposure of the entire Bush regime in that nefarious scheme, and to the necessity of Cheney & Co. covering it up (putting them in peril of indictment or impeachment), that they couldn't tolerate any more Rumsfeld incompetence and got rid of him.

3. Someone in the shadow government--or among other unseeable powers-that-be--finally asked the question "why did Donald Rumsfeld pull all NORAD decision-making powers into his own hands, six months prior to 9/11, and then go AWOL during the critical hour when hijacked planes were headed for DC?"--found out that he led the insider cabal who let it happen--and quietly insisted on his removal, on threat of exposing the whole regime.

I can think of other possibilities. What I question is that Rumsfeld was removed in response to the American people's overwhelming vote to end the war.

Apparently, this video is a satire. But I am interested anyway--in anything that addresses this subject (Rumsfeld and the midterms).
