Hillary Clinton Blows (Another) Hole in Her Florida Argument

by the Jed Report

Earlier today in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times, Hillary Clinton endorsed the Republican Party's decision to cut in half the voting power of the Florida delegation to the RNC.

...The problem? Democrats also supported the decision. In fact, it passed the state senate by a 37-2 margin and it passed the state house by a 118-0 margin. Moreover, the state party leadership steadfastly stuck with the January 29 date even though they knew the DNC would not seat the Florida delegations.

Clinton herself supported the DNC's punishment when she signed a pledge to honor the DNC's rules. The key line in that pledge: "the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee will strip states of 100% of their delegates and super delegates to the DNC National Convention if they violate the nomination calendar."

And now, even though Clinton is conceding that the Republican Party was correct to penalize its delegation, she is refusing to agree to a compromise that would apply the same exact penalty to the Democratic delegation. The basis of her refusal is a demonstrably false claim.

9. Give it up Hillary....
I appreciate and respect her for not quitting her campaign, since we are so close to the end, and it will be good to give the Democratic voters a say in those states that haven't yet voted.

But to expect that she is going to be able to meddle in the rules of this FL and MI mess is way out of bounds. She needs to get a grip, shut t.f. up, and move on.

there's no point in compromising with hillary, she will not settle for anything less than the nomination. lets say they give her half the delegates. if that's not enough to put her ahead, then what? you think she will stop there? she won't stop until she's in the white house. she doesn't give a shit about disenfranchisement or voter rights. she proved that when she agreed to take away FL and MI's delegates. she didn't just agree, her people were the ones that took the delegates away in the first place!

51. Read Rachel Maddows Blog on Huffington Post
So, how does the Democratic Party get a nominee before the convention? Seems to me there's two things that need to happen. One small, one big.

First, Obama's campaign should stop believing what most of the press says, and start believing what Clinton says -- she isn't budging. If they don't mind the prospect of a divided convention, then fine -- if they do mind that prospect, they'll have to fight for their desired outcome. Clinton is now arguing that taking the fight to the convention is OK for the Democrats -- even noble. This argument won't be defeated if it is ignored -- Obama's camp will have to rebut.

Second, if the Democrats are to avoid a divided convention, the Florida and Michigan dispute will have to be taken off the table -- settled in a way that avoids the risk of a rules dispute that stretches the nominating contest out through the convention. I can think of only one way to do that, but there may be others.

Here's my way: based on my read of NBC's delegate math, I think if the Clinton campaign won 100% of what they wanted on the Florida and Michigan dispute, Obama could still clinch the nomination -- even according to the most pro-Clinton math -- if 90 of the remaining 210-or-so undeclared superdelegates declared for Obama.

If they so declared before May 31st, the Rules and Bylaws committee would have no reason to take up the Florida and Michigan dispute because it would be a moot point -- Obama's camp could concede every Clinton demand on the subject and still win the nomination.

Otherwise? I'll be the twitchy one on radio row at the divided Democratic convention in Denver... spooked by the ghosts of 1968, 1972, 1980...

32. Why can't her supporters acknowledge and accept that she is lying?
Do they have so much animosity and hatred for Obama in their hearts that they have psychological trouble admitting and accepting the truth? Hillary agreed to the rules when she felt that she would win. Now that she is losing she wants to pretend that she is the Champion of Civil Rights?

Where was Hillary and Bill during Election 2000 when millions of black, Hispanic, Jewish and poor voters were being disenfranchised?

She loves OH so much, but where was she and Bill when OH was stolen in 2004?

WHERE WERE THE CLINTONS??!?!?

Election?

Well, Hillary was on the phone telling Edwards to quit grandstanding and to quit insisting that every vote count. And meanwhile her guy Carville was misrepresenting in discussions with Kerry on how many ballots had been left uncounted in Ohio. (This fact is confirmed by Woodward in his latest book)

Kerry should have had the spine to NOT concede regardless of what Carville told him. So I am not letting him off the hook. But Hillary needed to make the concession happen - if Kerry had gotten in, she would not have had the shot in 2008 for her run for the WH.

And she cared not one whit that these actions of hers left the nation under the Bush admniistration for another four years.

41. Jed Report is SO GREAT at presenting facts. Thank you.
It is absolutely mind-blowing how often one candidate and that candidate's campaign simply LIE in whatever way is convenient.

It is as if the candidate has no clue that video recording exists. The strategy at so many turns of this campaign seems to be nothing more than repeating LIES long enough that people forget the recent past and accept the repetitions as truth.

This cannot be spun-off as a late-night, overly-tired "misstatement." This is one more example of total strategical fabrication.

JED REPORT continues to provide an amazing service for low-information voters who won't take the time to sort through quotations. This video, just like the Bosnia one and others, gives ALL of us the words of the campaign to judge for ourselves.

I cannot wait for the time (soon) when Jed Report can devote time to sorting through the lies, temper tantrums, and dumb mistakes of John McCain.

Again, Thank YOU.

44. Trouble Is, The Video Is A Lie
Sorry Hillabamaniacs, but there is a forest out here around that tree you've broken your nose on.

The Florida Dems in that clip were voting FOR a paper trail on black-box voting machines. The kind of reform some of us have been working YEARS to make happen.

Now, why the Dems are at the mercy of the Repugs there for setting their own primary date (probably funding?), is beside the point. And yes, they knew the risk -- did what they thought might avoid penalty -- and it turned out to be not enough.

But a half-truth is still a lie. And to use their distressed position as part of this tedious pissing-off match -- that is thankfully mainly confined to the rubber walls of GD-P -- is just wrong and damaging.

Had you all funnelled this anger into demanding impeachment, we might well have a President Danforth or Warner actually signing FISA bills, and GI bills, and troop withdrawl orders by now.
