Union Ad Criticizes McCain on Health Care
By Kate Phillips
Updated As Senator John McCain spends the week talking about health care and health insurance coverage, the Service Employees International Union has begun broadcasting an ad against his plans in Ohio and Washington, D.C.
The ad uses what the union says are health-care workers who complain that Senator McCain’s plans would not help families afford health care coverage, ending with one woman saying, “We’ll still be feeling the pain.”
The midsection of the ad includes several clips of Mr. McCain with President Bush, tying the two together on health-care issues. It includes footage of Mr. Bush hugging and give Mr. McCain a kiss, an image that Democrats are bound to use over and over during the general election cycle.
The S.E.I.U.’s ad buy coincides with a new bus tour it began this week, starting in Cleveland, to promote and push for better health insurance coverage.
Update, 12:30 p.m.: Given that the service workers’ union has endorsed Senator Barack Obama, the Republican National Committee issued a release criticizing the Democratic candidate for allowing outside groups to campaign on his behalf. Alex Conant, a spokesman for the R.N.C. said in a statement: “Barack Obama’s wishy-washy position on special interests is the sort of ‘old politics’ voters are sick of. What happened to the candidate who used to denounce these sorts of independent political attacks?”
