So they are showing pics of Turino as part of the Olympics flogging
And it makes me wonder about going to the Olympic events, period. I'm pretty sure I would be happier in a cafe or wandering the streets. Certainly when the summer olympics were in Greece I thought that the last place I would want to be is Athens. They have all these segments on food and travel and one wonders why someone is wasting their time in the heat or cold or inside even.

Has anyone made a trip for the sole sake of seeing the Olympics? Hopping a cross town bus doesn't count.

1. I've never been to an Olympics.
I really enjoy the Olympics, and someday I'd like to go. When I do, I would probably mix olympics with other tourist stuff. Except I imagine that the worst possible time to visit any place for tourism is when it is hosting the olympics.

2. I wouldn't travel so far to stand on a ski slope
for more than a few hours. The opening and closing ceremonies might be nice for the pageantry. I'm just wondering if it's not better on TV anyway.

3. Just being there would be an experience but I'd have to
think hard and long about the prices. I understand tickets for some of the events like figure skating are $400.00 each...let alone the price of a hotel room and restaurant meals. May be best to watch on TV and save the $$$ for a planned European trip. Well worth every Euro spent. With careful planning, 2 can travel for 2 weeks throughout western Europe for about $2000 plus air fare. Simple B & B's, simple foods and spectacular history are life long memories. We've done it several times, it can be done reasonably without suffering in cheap, dingy places. A little research and ingenuity can get you to great places.

6. Geez, I didn't even think of the cost of tickets.
One hundred is more than I've ever paid for any sporting event. And I'm already at the cheap, dingy price level without the ticket cost.

4. Closest I've come is Lake Placid, NY...11 years later :)
The place is just beautiful with all the Olympic venues, memorbilia and history still in place (including the 1932 rink). The village hasn't changed much, still cute, great food and adorable "shoppes".

A great vacation destination, just breathtaking scenery, especially from the top of Whiteface Mountain :wow:

7. I'm planning on Vancouver
2010. Barely a day's drive from where I live. I'm so excited. I don't know what I'll see, don't really care. I've always wanted to go. I admire athletes, or anybody who works so hard to become the best at what they do. I'm planning on having a rip-roaring time!!!

8. Well, Vancouver's wonderful.
And the mountains spectacular. I still might not waste hours standing on a slope watching someone else ski, but I'd sure like to spend a week in BC.
