Hawaii Guv to Veto Unionization Bill

HONOLULU — Gov. Linda Lingle said Sunday she will veto a bill that would enable labor unions to automatically form with full negotiating rights whenever a majority of workers at a small business decide to organize.

Lingle said the measure would eliminate a worker's right to a secret ballot election when deciding whether or not to have union representation in the workplace.

The governor plans to send the vetoed bill to the Legislature on Monday.

"Under current law, a secret ballot process is used to determine whether a majority of employees desire collective representation," Lingle said. "This process provides employees anonymity and the opportunity to consider and weigh individual choices."

Lawmakers will have to decide whether to attempt an override, which requires a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate.
