COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A Columbus woman who forged checks on her former employer's account and set a fire to destroy the evidence has been given three to six years in prison.

April Soukup-Brewer pleaded guilty last month in Platte County District Court to charges of theft, tampering with evidence and to arson. The 29-year-old had faced more serious charges, but they were reduced in a plea deal.

On Friday, Judge Robert Steinke sentenced Soukup-Brewer to 20 months to four years for the arson, evidence tampering and probation violation, to run at the same time, and 16 months-to-two years on the theft charge, to run after the other sentence.

Soukup-Brewer stole more than 20 checks from a man who had employed her as a housekeeper for several years.
